    WHAT HAPPENED?

Kaizer Chiefs legend Itumeleng Khune played for the Soweto giants for 25 years, 20 of which were with the senior team.

He wanted to play until he was well past his 40s but the Glamour Boys forced him to hang his gloves at the beginning of the ongoing campaign.

Khune opted not to join any other team despite the offers he reportedly received.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Recently, Khune was engaged in a Nedbank Cup Sport blind challenge where he was asked to rank the five best keepers in the country with names hidden.

Mamelodi Sundowns and Bafana Bafana captain Ronwen Williams was included. The custodian has been doing well for both the club and national team.

In 2024, he was nominated for Ballon d'Or's Yashin trophy after his heroics that saw him win the African Men's Goalkeeper of the Year and the Interclub Player of the Year Awards in Africa. The 32-year-old also helped Bafana win a bronze medal in the 2023 Afcon.

Khune was Bafana's first choice for a decade, playing in the 2010 World Cup and 2013 Afcon which saw him win 91 caps putting him second on the all-time list.

He also won trophies regularly with the Glamour Boys.

Initially, Khune had placed Williams on top of the list, but it all changed when he had his name mentioned.

    WHAT KHUNE SAID

“I’ve worked hard, won trophies, and made my mark in South African football. I respect all the other great keepers on the list, but I’ve earned my place at number 1,” Khune told the media.
