In a match of contrasting halves at Dr. Petrus Molemela Stadium in the scorching Rocklands heat on Sunday, Marumo Gallants edged out Stellenbosch with a decisive header from Siyabulela Shai in the 17th minute.
Shai capitalized on a well-placed cross from Daniel Msendami, securing the lead for Gallants.
Throughout the first half, the Zimbabwe international and Thapelo Dhludhlu kept Stellenbosch’s defence under constant pressure with their pace and movement.
Despite their energy, the final passes from Gallants often missed the mark in critical areas.
Stellenbosch, the defending champions, struggled to respond effectively to Dan Malesela’s side. As a result, Gallants’ goalkeeper Washington Arubi was largely untested throughout the match. Dhludhlu came close to doubling the lead but shot straight at Sage Stephens, who showcased his skill with a solid save.
Gallants ultimately maintained their advantage, sealing a place in the Carling Knockout semi-finals.
