    WHAT HAPPENED?

Kaizer Chiefs opted against renewing Itumeleng Khune's contract which expires in June.

The veteran goalkeeper indicated that he was willing to continue playing but the club intended to offer him a non-playing role and work in their marketing department.

However, Khune recently revealed that he is a shareholder in the betting company Topbet, and any position for him at Chiefs might be a conflict of interest as the Soweto giants are also work with SuperSportBet.

Chiefs marketing manager Jessica Motaung said they are reviewing their standpoint with Khune.

    WHAT MOTAUNG SAID

“As a club we are certainly reviewing the situation,” Motaung said as per Sunday World.

“We have been in discussions with Itu about the way forward and the new dynamics need to be looked at holistically.

“But regardless of what happens through the discussions, Itu will always be part of the family – he is a legend in our team and someone we will always have a relationship with. Itu will always be part of the Kaizer Chiefs family, and he can be with us in many capacities," she added.

“So, in the meantime, we will sit on the drawing board and chat with him about the way forward."

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

While Khune is insisting he is not yet retired, it is now impossible for him to continue playing.

His involvement with a betting company does not permit him to be a footballer as per Fifa rules.

That ties his hands and he could not officially announce his retirement after spending 20 years playing professional football for Amakhosi.

    WHAT NEXT FOR KHUNE?

It remains to be seen how Chiefs will go on and employ Khune in any other capacity at the club.

In the meantime, the goalkeeper says he continues to train with the intention of keeping fit and getting back onto the field of play.
