    WHAT HAPPENED?

Kaizer Chiefs have not a single player in the Bafana Bafana side currently participating in the 2026 Fifa World Cup qualifiers.

Coach Hugo Broos has been excluding Amakhosi players as the Soweto giants struggle for consistency.

South Africa legend Doctor Khumalo reacts to the suggestion that Mduduzi Shabalala, Amajita star Mfundo Vilakazi and Thabo Cele should be considered for Bafana duty.

    WHAT KHUMALO SAID

“At the moment I don’t think there is any player for now,” said Khumalo as per iDiski Times.

“Vilakazi is playing for the U20 national team. He is being selected for a national team that is a national team. Cele [still needs] another four, five months."

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Broos' continued exclusion of Chiefs players from the national side is a reflection of Amakhosi's struggles in recent seasons in domestic football.

Players like Yusuf Maart, Pule Mmodi, Sibongiseni Mthethwa and Bruce Bvuma have lost their national team places in recent years.

Even defender Inacio Miguel is no longer being called up for the Angola national side.

However, Rushwin Dortley was a consistent starter until he got injured while Edmilson Dove is a Mozambique regular.

    WHAT NEXT?

After the ongoing World Cup qualifiers, Bafana will be back in action in September to resume their bid to book a ticket to the global competition.

It is to be seen if there will be Chiefs players who improve their game to be considered for national team duty with South Africa.
