    WHAT HAPPENED?

Coach Jose Riveiro has been with Orlando Pirates since the 2022-23 season.

He has so far helped the team win five titles in the Premier Soccer League competitions.

However, a couple of weeks ago, he confirmed he will be leaving the Sea Robbers for another challenge.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Prior to the announcement, Pirates were preparing to play Pyramids in the Caf Champions League semi-final.

The Buccaneers were also in pole position to challenge Mamelodi Sundowns for the Premier Soccer League title.

Bucs went on to suffer defeat against Pyramids in the continental competition, before another loss to Sekhukhune United in the PSL.

Ahead of the Nedbank Cup final against Kaizer Chiefs, Bafana Bafana midfielder Thalente Mbatha has revealed even the players were not aware of the Spaniard's decision until the club made it official.

  • WHAT MBATHA SAID

“He didn’t tell us that he was leaving," the Bucs midfielder said ahead of the weekend assignment.

"We saw the official statement from the club, but I believe it’s something that’s not on the back of our minds, as they were talking and discussing on their own.

"We were not there as players. As players, we have to be professional and stick to the game,” Mbatha concluded.

All they can do is ensure they deliver another title for the coach as a parting gift.
