BackPagePixCape Town City FC midfielder Fortune Makaringe recently reflected on the lessons he learned during his five years at Orlando Pirates.
The Katlehong-born player has enjoyed a promising start to life in the Mother City under coach Eric Tinkler, already making six appearances across all competitions.
With time, his partnership with Kamohelo Mokotjo and Haashim Domingo is expected to become a formidable force for the Citizens.
While Makaringe contributed to Pirates' success—helping them secure two Nedbank Cup trophies and three MTN8 titles—he struggled to cement a regular starting spot.
He has now opened up about his experience with the Soweto giants and the challenges that came with limited game time.
Backpage“I learnt a lot from Orlando Pirates. From coach [Jose] Riviero, I also learned a lot because they are a big team,” Makaringe said, as reported by Farpost.
“Leaving was the best option at that time, but I am very grateful for how they helped me develop that hunger to win.
“At Pirates, the motto is to win all. We didn’t do permutations. Stakes are always high. One lesson that maybe one took from the Pirates team is patience.
“There were moments where we were under pressure, but we could still behave in a proper way, to say, ‘let’s not rush, let’s not commit ourselves too early.
“What I can say is you have to be an example to the other guys. Everyone has to be an example. There were young players who were still coming up, and we could not be bad role models.
“The lessons I learnt at Pirates shaped me and made me strong. I am a better person than before I arrived at Pirates. I’m less emotional and have a thicker skin.
“But if I was not given that opportunity, I don’t think I would have learnt those lessons anywhere else. So I’m very sober in my thinking, but we’ve seen these things happen before.”
Makaringe’s time at Pirates was more than just about winning trophies—it shaped him as both a player and person.
He credits his growth to the high standards set at the club and the influence of coach Jose Riveiro, which taught him discipline, resilience, and leadership.
His ability to stay composed under pressure and act as a role model for younger players will be crucial as he seeks to make an impact at Cape Town City.
BackPagePixMakaringe's move to City represents a fresh start, giving him the opportunity to play regularly and fully showcase his abilities.
With the club aiming to challenge for silverware, his experience will be vital in guiding the team through the season.
As he continues to develop under Tinkler’s guidance, his growing midfield partnership with Mokotjo and Domingo could become the foundation for City’s success.
