    WHAT HAPPENED?

Before the appointment of Jose Riveiro as Orlando Pirates coach at the beginning of the 2022-23 season, Benni McCarthy was among the locals who had hoped to be considered.

However, the Spaniard was handed a three-year contract that will expire at the end of the ongoing 2024-25 campaign.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

English heavyweights Manchester United then employed him as strikers' coach, a post he held until the end of last season.

Kaizer Chiefs made changes in their technical team but despite calls from the fans to try out McCarthy, Tunisian Nasreddine Nabi was given the job.

In his interview with MSW, McCarthy revealed he was looking forward to getting a chance to coach one of the Soweto giants but didn't get the opportunity.

    WHAT MCCARTHY SAID

“After coach Gavin Hunt left Kaizer Chiefs, there was a possibility that I could have gotten the job, but never did just before coach Nabi, there was an opportunity," the former striker recalls.

"There was a cry from everybody, but I never got it because for whatever reason.

“I played there at Pirates. Before coach Jose Riveiro came. There was an opportunity, you know, I was doing exceptionally well with probably one of the least (expected) teams that people expect for you to do what you do, AmaZulu.

"There would have been a possibility to go there, [it] didn't happen. Why not? Because exactly, that's just a trend," McCarthy concluded.

    WHAT NEXT?

Riveiro has justified his appointment by finishing second in as many PSL seasons, as well as securing five local trophies. Nabi is just getting started at Amakhosi.

The Glamour Boys have gone nine seasons without winning silverware.

McCarthy still hopes to get a team to coach either in Mzansi or abroad.
