Itumeleng Khune, who has yet to officially announce his retirement after over two decades with Kaizer Chiefs and was recently released at the end of the 2023/24 season, recently lauded Elvis Chipezeze for his outstanding performances.
The 34-year-old was pivotal in helping Magesi FC secure their first-ever top-flight trophy in South African football.
The goalkeeper stood out with four Man of the Match awards during the Carling Knockout Cup campaign.
His efforts earned him not only accolades but also R400,000 in prize money.
Khune highlighted Chipezeze’s determination and resilience, especially after transitioning from being a Zimbabwean international to thriving in the PSL.
The former Bafana Bafana keeper, a seasoned professional, acknowledged the importance of such contributions in shaping a winning team.
His journey from uncertainty to becoming a key player at Magesi FC is inspiring. His form has sparked conversations about him potentially winning the coveted Goalkeeper of the Season award.
Backpagepix"I think it gives me satisfaction to support the guys that are doing well, not only just goalkeepers, but I'm more interested in goalkeepers than outfield players in different positions," as reported by Soccer Laduma.
"I have the utmost respect for all footballers, but I'm more in love with goalkeepers because it's what I used to do and whenever I see them doing well, it gives me satisfaction. So I sent a message on Instagram, and I'm glad that he received it, he replied to it, and even live on television. He acknowledges that and I just wanna say I'm proud of him.
"He must keep up the good work. And he's one of the best that we have in our league. One of the best. So I tipped him to go all the way with the same performance that he produced in this Carling Black Label Cup," he added.
"To win four Man of the Match awards in a row is not child's play. I once did three and I thought it was not possible, it was not doable, but I managed to win three straight Man of the Match awards and I'm happy to see another goalkeeper is setting the bar higher, so he's challenging the current and the future goalkeepers to say 'hey, catch me if you can'."
"I just want to say he must keep up the good work and go and win the Goalkeeper of the Season," he added
BackpagepixFor the 34-year-old Elvis Chipezeze, this moment represents a lifeline in his career.
Having been given a chance to play in the PSL, he must now cement his position as a top-tier goalkeeper.
His success in the Carling Knockout Cup proves his ability to perform under pressure.
Chiefs, on the other hand, have seen their keepers Brandon Petersen and Fiacre Ntwari struggle to keep clean sheets this season.
Bruce Bvuma is patiently waiting for his chance with the Soweto giants having released Khune in June.

Elvis Chipezeze’s next challenge is a league clash against Marumo Gallants.
After a disappointing loss to Chippa United in East London, Magesi will aim to bounce back.
A win is critical to help the team climb out of the relegation zone.
Chipezeze’s leadership and shot-stopping abilities will be vital in ensuring a strong defensive performance.
This match provides him with another opportunity to showcase his talent and reinforce his reputation as one of the league’s top goalkeepers.
For Magesi, securing three points could be the turning point in their campaign.
