African record under threat as Janine Van Wyk makes Banyana Banyana squad ahead of 2024 Wafcon qualifiers

Ellis included Janine van Wyk in her squad with South Africa set to host Burkina Faso on November 30, before travelling to West Africa for the return leg of the 2024 Wafcon qualifiers on December 4.Van Wyk is back in the Banyana fold after leaving camp during the recent 2024 Olympic Games qualifiers against DR Congo.Missing from Ellis' squad are captain Refiloe Jane and defender Bambanani Mbane who are nursing injuries.

WHAT HAPPENED?

BANYANA BANYANA SQUAD

Banyana are the reigning Wafcon champions and they are under pressure to defend this title.But they first have to navigate their way past Burkina Faso to book a ticket for the tournament to be hosted by Morocco for a second consecutive edition.South Africa will be trying to avoid the grim prospect of becoming defending champions who will not make it to the finals to defend their crown. It is also to be seen if Ellis will finally field Van Wyk, 36, against Burkina Faso having left last month's camp without playing.The veteran defender is chasing her dream to become the most-capped African footballer - men or women.She is currently on 183 caps while Egyptian legend Ahmed Hassan holds the record with 184 caps.
