Euro 2024 Tournament Debutants GFXGOAL

Cole Palmer, Florian Wirtz and the tournament debutants set to take Euro 2024 by storm

Euro 2024 is now just a matter of days away, and for several of those players who have made their country's final cut, the European Championship will represent a significant milestone in their careers; from breakout youngsters, to injury victims, to late bloomers who have claimed a hard-earned place in their squad, a whole host of names will be making their major tournament bows in Germany.

But who are the debutants who are set to make the biggest impact? As a result of Euro 2020 being postponed by a year and the 2022 World Cup taking place in the winter, there hasn't been all that much change in terms of personnel from those competitions, but there are still plenty of stars on the cusp of their first foray into senior international tournament football.

After our lists of NXGN wonderkids and potential breakout stars, GOAL brings you the tournament debutants who are set to take Euro 2024 by storm...

  • Federico DIMARCO-italy-20240324-friendlies(C)Getty Images

    Federico Dimarco (Italy)

Despite being arguably the best left wing-back on the planet at the moment, Federico Dimarco will be making his tournament bow in Germany at the ripe old age of 26. The marauding Inter man comes into the European Championship off the back of another exceptional season, making 14 goal contributions in all competitions as the Nerazzurri claimed the Scudetto, including an incredible strike from the halfway line. He's had to bide his time, but expect him to be one of Italy's key men in Germany.

    Eberechi Eze (England)

Eberechi Eze will have been something of a surprise call-up to the England squad for many casual Premier League viewers, but anyone who watched Oliver Glasner's Crystal Palace side in the months leading up to Euro 2024 will know that he has more than earned his place. The explosive attacker is in the form of his life - a chance-creation machine in Glasner's revamped Palace side and a threat from across the frontline. He can make a serious impact for Gareth Southgate.

  • fuhrich(C)Getty Images

    Chris Fuhrich (Germany)

He won't be a starter in his debut tournament on home soil, but Stuttgart's Chris Fuhrich has shown in Germany's warm-up games that he has the ability to make a big impact as a substitute, and perhaps that could eventually earn him a place in Julian Nagelsmann's XI. The 26-year-old winger caught the eye for his high-flying club this season, making 16 goal contributions as Die Schwaben qualified for the Champions League. He faces some stiff competition for minutes, but he is a debutant to watch.

  • Anthony Gordon England 2024Getty Images

    Anthony Gordon (England)

The only specialist left winger in the entire England squad, that could well play into Anthony Gordon's favour given his consistent form over the season. A refreshingly direct runner who does not disappoint with his end product, the 23-year-old reached double figures in both goals and assists for Newcastle in 2023-24, and will offer something different to the Three Lions' other wide options at the Euros, with his knack of making his mark in big games potentially coming in very handy.

  • Alejandro GrimaldoGetty

    Alex Grimaldo (Spain)

Another in-form left wing-back who is a shining example of patience being a virtue, 27-year-old Alex Grimaldo only made his senior Spain debut in November 2023 despite being a consistent performer for Benfica for a number of years. However, last summer's free transfer to Bayer Leverkusen saw him take his game to another level, and he was thrust into the limelight amid his club's incredible unbeaten domestic campaign and run to the Europa League final under Xabi Alonso. His 31 goal contributions reflect that he will be a potent attacking threat for La Roja.

  • Rasmus Hojlund Denmark 03232024(C)Getty Images

    Rasmus Hojlund (Denmark)

It was a strange season for Rasmus Hojlund, with the young striker's 16 goals coming in fits and starts for Manchester United following his blockbuster £72 million ($92m) transfer from Atalanta. He has been a more regular goal-scorer for Denmark, though, netting seven times in eight appearances in qualifying for Euro 2024, including a hat-trick against Finland. The 21-year-old will shoulder the goal-scoring burden in Germany and will hope a prolific tournament can kickstart his club career.

  • Khvicha Kvaratskhelia Georgia 2023Getty Images

    Khvicha Kvaratskhelia (Georgia)

A nation making its tournament bow will be grateful to have a superstar to lead them, and that man is Khvicha Kvaratskhelia for Georgia. The winger was not quite as devastating this season as he was in Napoli's remarkable charge to the Scudetto in 2022-23, but he was still a leading light in his club's limp title defence and will be chomping at the bit to seize this opportunity with his country. He had a big impact in the latter part of Georgia's qualification campaign and will be their talisman at the Euros proper.

  • JOAO NEVES-portugal-20240321(C)Getty Images

    Joao Neves (Portugal)

Born in 2004, Joao Neves narrowly missed out on GOAL's list of NXGN players to watch at the Euros, but the 19-year-old takes his place here as he prepares to make his first senior appearance at a major tournament. A diminutive defensive midfielder with wonderful technique and passing ability, something of a throwback with his tucked-in shirt, he is by no means a guaranteed starter for Portugal, but he has more than enough ability to stake his claim in the group stage and see off some stiff competition. There is a reason he's being linked with a big-money move away from Benfica amid interest from Manchester United and Arsenal.

  • Cole Palmer England 2024Getty Images

    Cole Palmer (England)

The breakout star of the Premier League season, Chelsea's Cole Palmer can be England's not-so-secret weapon in Germany. The versatile attacker rarely fails to influence a game, coming into the tournament off an unbelievable club campaign that yielded 42 goal contributions and plenty of big-game performances. It will be interesting to see how Southgate deploys him - and indeed whether he will even start - but he has demonstrated with his blend of technique and end product that he can have a significant impact on England's chances of tournament success.

  • Pellegrini Italy EcuadorGetty

    Lorenzo Pellegrini (Italy)

Another Italian star who has had to wait patiently for this moment to arrive. In a cruel twist of fate, Roma captain Lorenzo Pellegrini was forced to withdraw from the Italy squad on the eve of their glorious Euro 2020 campaign after suffering an injury, before the Azzurri then disastrously failed to qualify for the 2022 World Cup. The classy operator will be taking nothing for granted, but he is finally on the cusp of his tournament bow after another fine season at club level where he contributed to 15 goals from midfield.

  • Benjamin Sesko Slovenia Kazakhstan Euro 2024 qualifyingGetty

    Benjamin Sesko (Slovenia)

It was widely expected that Benjamin Sesko would be putting himself in the shop window at Euro 2024 amid interest in the striker from a host of leading Premier League clubs. Instead, he is set to put an end to those rumours by unexpectedly committing his future to RB Leipzig. The east German club will be thrilled with that bit of business, especially after the hitman finished the Bundesliga season by netting in seven games in a row. Now he can focus on showing Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester United what they are missing out on as he leads the line for Slovenia in the country where he plies his club trade.

  • Dominik Szoboszlai Hungary 2024Getty Images

    Dominik Szoboszlai (Hungary)

Another star who missed out on Euro 2020 through injury, Hungary talisman and captain Dominik Szoboszlai is finally set to grace the biggest stage and will be determined to seize the moment. His debut season with Liverpool fizzled out somewhat after a fast start, but that will only serve as added motivation for an attacking midfielder who is absolutely essential to Hungary's approach play and, of course, a set-piece specialist. They have only lost one game since he took the captaincy in late 2022; he gives his nation hope.

  • Florian Wirtz Germany 2024Getty

    Florian Wirtz (Germany)

Although he is still just 21, this is only Florian Wirtz's debut senior tournament because the 2022 World Cup came too soon after he suffered a dreaded ACL injury in March that year. One of two generational attacking talents in the Germany squad alongside Jamal Musiala, Wirtz enjoyed an extraordinary season at club level, both individually and collectively with Alonso's Leverkusen as they claimed a domestic double - thanks in no small part to the attacking midfielder's 30 goal contributions across the Bundesliga and DFB-Pokal. He will share the creative burden with Musiala on home soil, and if he has enough in the tank, he could make a superlative personal year somehow even better.
