Havertz, Partey & Sane: Biggest 20 transfers of the 2020 window

Wolves fans were left disappointed when right-back Matt Doherty moved to Tottenham, but they will hope to have brought in an upgrade with the arrival of Nelson Semedo from Barcelona.

"It isn’t often that we have the opportunity to sign a world-class player from a world-class club," said Wolves chairman Jeff Shi. "Nelson’s signing shows we will never stop progressing and we are still hungry and humble in our heart."

The fee for Semedo was slightly more than those reported for Sergio Reguilon, Thiago, Gabriel Magalhaes and Jonathan David this summer.

After three hugely impressive seasons in the Championship, Ollie Watkins made the step up to the Premier League this summer, becoming Aston Villa's record signing in the process.

Eyebrows were raised over the fee but the 24-year-old wide forward has already looked to justify his hefty price tag, scoring in back-to-back games in the Carabao Cup before netting a sensational hat-trick against champions Liverpool.

Barcelona announced the signing of Portuguese wonderkid Francisco Trincao back in January, but the move did not become official until July 1.

The 20-year-old winger is thought of as one of Europe's most exciting young forwards, and he came off the bench in each of Barca's first three games of the season.

Since joining Barca, Trincao has also made his senior international debut, replacing Bernardo Silva in a 4-1 Nations League win over Croatia.

Leeds showed they mean business on their return to the Premier League with a number of big signings, but Spain international Rodrigo topped the lot.

Now 29, the forward is back for a second shot at English football after a brief stint at Bolton 10 years ago. Since then, he has impressed at Benfica and Valencia, though 2019-20 only brought seven goals in all competitions.

Rodrigo opened his Leeds account with the equaliser in his side's thrilling 1-1 draw at home to Manchester City.

Chelsea made a statement of intent when they announced the signing of Hakim Ziyech earlier in the year, and his move officially went through when the summer window opened.

Ziyech dazzled in four years at Ajax, and played a leading role in his former side's 4-4 draw at Stamford Bridge in the Champions League.

The Morocco international missed the start of the 2020-21 season after picking up an injury in pre-season.

Netherlands international Donny van de Beek had been linked with a move away from Ajax for some time, but didn't join the initial exodus of their Champions League semi-finalists in 2019.

Manchester United and Real Madrid had been touted as his likely destinations, and it was United who won the race this summer, bringing him in to provide competition in midfield for Paul Pogba and Bruno Fernandes.

“Having spoken to the manager about his vision for this team, the direction that the club is going in is hugely exciting and I cannot wait to be a part of that," Van de Beek said.

Wolves shocked the world in early September when they smashed their transfer record to sign highly-rated teenager Fabio Silva from Porto.

Nuno Espirito Santo added another Portuguese player to his ranks with Silva, who had only scored one top-flight goal for Porto, arriving to ease the burden on Raul Jimenez.

Silva made his Premier League debut in Wolves' defeat to Manchester City.

Leicester reportedly beat off competition from a number of clubs to sign 19-year-old defender Wesley Fofana from Saint-Etienne in a record sale for the Ligue 1 club.

There is a lot of excitement around Fofana, evidenced by the huge fee paid for him after just 20 top-flight appearances.

"A lot of work and persistence has gone in [on the signing]," Brendan Rodgers said. "He has limited experience but when you see him play, he looks like he's been playing a lot longer. He's aggressive, he's quick, he's good in the air."

Manchester City's defence has been their Achilles heel over the last year or so, and Pep Guardiola looked to remedy that with the signing of Nathan Ake from Bournemouth.

Formerly of Chelsea, the Netherlands international proved himself to be one of the Premier League's most impressive defenders in three years at Bournemouth, though some asked questions of the size of the transfer fee from a relegated side.

Ake made his debut in the 3-1 win at Wolves in City's opening game, and scored his first goal in the 5-2 defeat against Leicester.

Jurgen Klopp said Diogo Jota had been on his list of transfer targets for three years when Liverpool finally got their man this summer.

The 23-year-old had impressed at Wolves since helping them to promotion from the Championship in 2018, and arrived at Anfield to give a much-needed alternative to Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah out wide.

Jota scored his first goal for Liverpool against Arsenal, coming off the bench in a 3-1 Premier League win at Anfield.

Bayern Munich finally completed one of the longest-running transfer sagas of recent years as Leroy Sane returned to the Bundesliga from Manchester City.

The 24-year-old hit the ground running with a goal and two assists as Bayern thrashed Schalke on the opening day, though he suffered a small injury before the international break.

In four seasons in Manchester, Sane registered 39 goals and 45 assists in 135 games.

Mauro Icardi scored 24 goals in 30 games for PSG on loan in 2019-20, and the French giants opted to make the move permanent with a four-year contract.

At one point, it had seemed as though Icardi was to find himself in the wilderness after a reported breakdown in his relationship with the club, but eventually a deal was reached.

Icardi's arrival heralded the end of Edinson Cavani's time at PSG, with the Uruguayan completing a free-transfer switch to Manchester United after his contract in Paris expired.

Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone was reportedly left dumbfounded when Arsenal triggered the release clause for key midfielder Thomas Partey late on transfer deadline day.

The Gunners had been linked with Partey throughout the window but, when their move for Houssem Aouar fell through, it looked like being an underwhelming end to the summer.

But Mikel Arteta got his man, adding another piece to his Arsenal jigsaw and leaving Atletico without any time to find a replacement - though Lucas Torreira did go the other way on loan.

The total value of the deal to take Victor Osimhen to Napoli could end up passing the €80 million (£73m/$94m) mark, so there is considerable pressure on the 21-year-old to make his mark.

Despite the huge outlay, Napoli boss Gennaro Gattuso has warned fans not to expect too much from Osimhen, saying "it's not like we signed Pele or Maradona".

Osimhen scored 18 goals in 38 games for Lille, and netted back-to-back hat-tricks in his first two friendly appearances in Naples.

Timo Werner had looked for all the world like he would end up at Liverpool this summer, but Chelsea eventually beat their rivals to sign one of Europe's most exciting forwards.

Werner scored his first goal in a Carabao Cup draw against Tottenham, which the Blues eventually lost on penalties.

Frank Lampard will be hoping Werner's goals, and his link-up with Germany team-mate Kai Havertz, can propel Chelsea towards a title challenge.

The second, but not last, Chelsea entry in the top 20, Ben Chilwell arrived from Leicester to solve the Blues' problems at left-back.

He dazzled on his Premier League debut, notching a goal, assist and a clean sheet at home to Crystal Palace.

Chilwell says he is hoping to emulate England great Ashley Cole at Stamford Bridge.

One of the more unexpected deals of the summer window, Barca spent big on 30-year-old midfielder Miralem Pjanic, with the 24-year-old Arthur heading to Juventus.

“I’m really excited, really happy, it’s an honour to be here and to play for this club. I really can’t wait to see my team-mates and to start this new season," Pjanic said.

“I’m really proud to join this club, it’s a real dream and I hope the supporters can soon be in the stadium to play in front of them at the Camp Nou."

It was a summer of upheaval in Manchester City's defence, with Ruben Dias arriving alongside Nathan Ake and Nicolas Otamendi leaving for Benfica.

It is hoped the 23-year-old can fill the gap left by former captain Vincent Kompany.

“It is really exciting to be part of such a talented squad and to play for a world-class manager like Pep Guardiola, who has a proven track record of developing young players like myself," Dias said.

Plenty questioned the logic behind Juventus and Barcelona's Arthur-Pjanic swap this summer, but most agreed it was the Serie A side who got the better end of the deal.

The talented 24-year-old bade an emotional farewell to Barca's fans as he left, amid reports he never wanted to leave Camp Nou in the first place.

Arthur made his Serie A debut in a 2-2 draw with Roma.

Kai Havertz to Chelsea was one of the most hotly-anticipated deals of the summer and the Blues finally got it over the line once Bayer Leverkusen were knocked out of the Europa League.

With Christian Pulisic and Hakim Ziyech injured, Havertz started the season out of position but he scored his first goals in a Carabao Cup hat-trick against Barnsley.

At 21, Havertz is one of the world's most promising young talents and Chelsea were delighted to tie him down for his best years with a five-year contract.
