AFPSunderland make €30m splash! Dayann Methalie joins from Toulouse
Record-breaking investment for the Black Cats
Sunderland have completed the signing of left-back Methalie from Toulouse in a deal that underlines their status as a rising force in English football. According to The Athletic, the 20-year-old defender has joined the club in a package worth €28 million plus €2m in add-ons, representing a massive financial commitment from the Wearside board.
The arrival of Methalie is a clear statement of intent following the club's impressive seventh-place finish last term. By securing one of Ligue 1's most highly-rated defensive prospects, Sunderland are reinforcing a squad that must now balance domestic duties with the rigours of the Europa League. The youngster, who will wear the No. 6 shirt, becomes the club's second signing of the summer transfer window following the acquisition of Thomas Meunier in July.
AFPMethalie ready for the Premier League challenge
After completing his move to the Stadium of Light, Methalie expressed his enthusiasm for the project currently underway in the Northeast. Speaking to Sunderland's official website, he said: 'I'm really excited to be here and can't wait to pull on a Sunderland shirt for the first time. This is a brilliant time to join the club. I followed Sunderland's progress last season and it was incredible to see the team finish seventh and qualify for the Europa League. When I heard about the opportunity to come here, it was an easy decision. I'm really excited to play in the Premier League and Europa League and to experience that with the Sunderland fans.'
The defender's move comes on the back of a strong 2025-26 campaign, where he made 30 first-team appearances while contributing two goals and two assists. Clearly motivated by the trajectory of the club and the chance to test himself against the world's best, he said: 'I know how ambitious the club is, and I want to help the team continue to progress and give the supporters plenty to be proud of.'
A rapid rise through the French ranks
Methalie's journey to the Premier League has been characterized by a rapid ascent through the professional ranks in France. He joined the Toulouse academy in 2014 and developed through their youth system before being promoted to the first team in the summer of 2025. His impact was immediate; after making his Ligue 1 debut in August 2025, he established himself as a regular starter.
Measuring six-foot-two, the versatile defender regularly featured as a left wing-back in Carles Martinez's 3-4-3 system at Toulouse. Before departing to succeed Kasper Hjulmand as Bayer Leverkusen head coach in June, Martinez relied heavily on Methalie's stamina and presence to lock down the entire flank.
AFPInternational pedigree and the road ahead
Beyond his club success, Methalie has been a consistent presence in the French youth setup, earning caps at under-19, under-20, and under-21 levels - with his most recent U21 appearance coming against the Faroe Islands in November 2025. His international and club experience could prove vital as Sunderland prepare to kick off their Premier League campaign against Ipswich Town on Saturday.
