  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Yamal has agreed a new contract with Barcelona, shortly before turning 18 years of age this summer. But he was asked in an interview on El Partizado de COPE whether he would ever consider playing for the club's fiercest rivals, Real Madrid.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Players rarely move directly between Barcelona and Real Madrid, but when they do it is usually extremely controversial. Luis Enrique was a Real Madrid player until a 1996 free transfer to Barcelona, while Los Blancos triggered Luis Figo's release clause to poach the Portuguese winger from Barcelona in a world record transfer in 2000. Figo was greeted with a pig's head thrown at him by fans on his first return to Camp Nou with Real Madrid.

  • DID YOU KNOW?

Barcelona insinuated last year that Paris Saint-Germain had tried and failed with a world record €250 million (£211m/$277m) bid for Yamal, although the French club "one million per cent" denied this. Barcelona president Joan Laporta has also made claims about turning down a similar bid from Inter in 2006 for Lionel Messi during his first spell in office.

    WHAT NEXT?

Before enjoying what is likely to be a rare summer off over the course of his career, Yamal will contest the UEFA Nations League Finals with Spain. It starts with a semi-final against France on June 5, followed by a final or third-place playoff against either Germany or Portugal three days later. By the time he returns to pre-season with Barcelona in July, Yamal could even be sporting a new jersey, having been tipped to assume Messi's iconic No.10.
