MLS Power Ranks April 2025GOAL

MLS Power Rankings: New England Revolution appear reinvigorated, San Diego FC and Columbus Crew make statements, Seattle Sounders get back on track

Matchday 11 of the 2025 MLS campaign played out as expected, for the most part. Of the 15 matches, only three results surprised, as the hierarchies in the league take shape.

Bruce Arena and the San Jose Earthquakes put four goals past the in-form Portland Timbers, while FC Cincinnati were upset 1-0 by NYCFC - and with the loss, fell off the top spot in the Eastern Conference. They now sit third behind both the Columbus Crew and the Philadelphia Union, who secured wins.

Upon his return to the XI, Christian Benteke led D.C. United to a thrilling 2-1 victory over the Colorado Rapids, another surprise result.

Elsewhere, Inter Miami cruised to a 4-1 victory over the New York Red Bulls, with both Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez scoring, while San Diego FC stomped FC Dallas 5-0. The Seattle Sounders, meanwhile, put four goals past St. Louis CITY SC for their third win in the last four matches. And Caleb Porter's New England Revolution defeated Toronto FC 2-0, marking the Revs' fourth straight win.

Who's leading the pack, and who's falling short of expectations? GOAL presents the latest 2025 MLS Power Rankings.

Note: Previous rankings were released on April 28

  • Jonathan Sirois CF MontrealImagn

    30CF Montreal

    Prior Ranking: 30

Result: Lost 2-1 to Philadelphia Union

Ramifications: They scored a goal, and right now, that's progress. Another loss, though. Just zero confidence, momentum, identity - the list goes on.

  • 29Los Angeles Galaxy

    Prior Ranking: 29

Result: Lost 1-0 to Sporting Kansas City

Ramifications: LA made even more history on Matchday 11 - and not in a good way. They became the first team to lose without conceding a single shot attempt from the opposition. That's right, Sporting didn't take a single shot, and still won.

Shout-out to own-goal, a real hero this MLS campaign.

Another loss, and it's becoming dire at this point. The defending MLS Cup champions are still winless in 11 matches. Greg Vanney's seat has to be warm. More worrying, though, both Gabriel Pec and Joseph Paintsil were subbed off the pitch Sunday with what appeared to be injuries. If their DP duo are hurt in any capacity, this stretch will only get worse.

  • 28Atlanta United

    Prior Ranking: 28

    Result: Drew Nashville SC 1-1

Ramifications: Atlanta were at home, and they bunkered for the final 70 minutes of the match after scoring 20 minutes in. Why? Zero idea what Ronny Deila was doing. During the first 20 minutes of the match, the hosts had 59 percent possession, and led 1-0. The final 70? They had just 31 percent. Just a complete mess.

  • 27Toronto FC

    Prior Ranking: 24

Result: Lost to New England 2-0

Ramifications: Woof. Blanked at home, and outclassed in every sense throughout the match. Their second straight loss, and they're still at just one win on the season - it's not good enough from anyone.

  • Vancouver Whitecaps vs. St. Louis CITYImagn

    26St. Louis CITY SC

    Prior Ranking: 23

Result: Lost to Seattle Sounders 4-1

Ramifications: Bullied by Seattle all game, CITY are now winless in seven straight matches. They're becoming a rather dreadful watch, with little identity on the pitch. After going into the halftime break at 1-1, CITY sat back and tried to absorb pressure, and instead, conceded three goals over the final 30-plus minutes.

  • Houston Dynamo 2025Imagn

    25Houston Dynamo

    Prior Ranking: 17

    Result: Lost to LAFC 2-0

Ramifications: Houston didn't register a single shot on goal, and only had four shots on the night - it just was not good enough in the final-third. Factor in the fact Franco Escobar saw red in stoppage-time for a second yellow card offense, and it just was not their day.

With just 10 points on the season, Houston sit second-to-last in the West, and Ben Olsen's leash is likely tightening.

  • 24San Jose Earthquakes

    Prior Ranking: 27

    Result: Defeated Portland Timbers 4-1

Ramifications: Bruce Arena shifted to a back-three, and gave rookie Max Floriani the start on the right side of the defense - someone to keep an eye on as a breakout performer in weeks to come. It was a perfect setup defensively to force transitional play, and they flourished, with Cristian Espinoza registering a first-half brace to set them on track for all three points. Well done.

  • 23Chicago Fire

    Prior Ranking: 22

    Result: Drew Orlando City 0-0

Ramifications: Gregg Berhalter has to be furious with Chris Brady. What on earth was he thinking? The Fire goalkeeper was sent off for a DOGSO offense in what was just an unnecessary charge off his line.

Inside the opening 20 minutes, the Fire registered an xG of 2.79 - getting no return from that is pretty remarkable. Now winless in six, the Fire and Berhalter have a lot of thinking to do.

  • 22Sporting Kansas City

    Prior Ranking: 26

    Result: Defeated LA Galaxy 1-0

Ramifications: A really funny win. Zero shot attempts, and thanks to an own goal, they walk away with three points. No need to elaborate, it wasn't a good Sporting performance, but it was worse for LA.

  • 21D.C. United

    Prior Ranking: 25

Result: Lost to Philadelphia Union 3-0

Ramifications: Benteke back in the XI meant D.C. had a chance - and they took it. The Belgian forward found the back of the net in first half stoppage-time, a 45+4 header. With momentum in hand, they found another before the halftime whistle, with winger Hosei Kijima drilling home an effort in 45+7 to give them the lead at the break, and ultimately, all three points.

A resilient win, and one that was desperately needed.

  • Lucho Acosta FC DallasImagn

    20FC Dallas

    Prior Ranking: 16

Result: Lost to San Diego FC 5-0

Ramifications: Uff. The highs and lows of MLS. From defeating Inter Miami on Matchday 10 with a three-goal comeback, to being pummeled a week later by an expansion franchise.

Still without Petar Musa available, the club has very little going for them in the attack, and it showed on Saturday. Eric Quill will have to figure things out fast.

  • 19Real Salt Lake

    Prior Ranking: 21

    Result: Lost to Vancouver 2-1

Ramifications: Unlucky. They played really well against a great Vancouver side. Arthur Cabral saved a Whitecaps penalty, and Diego Luna scored one for RSL, but it wasn't enough against the league's best.

  • 18Colorado Rapids

    Prior Ranking: 13

Result: Lost to D.C. United 2-1

Ramifications: Really poor result from Colorado. They conceded two goals in first-half stoppage-time, and it rattled them. With uust one win in their last five now, they're hitting a small skid.

The biggest storyline from the club on Saturday was off the pitch, though, as manager Chris Armas got stranded in Texas after being inducted into the National Soccer Hall of Fame. Due to mechanical issues with a plane, he was unable to coach the team and did not attend the match.

  • Alonso Martinez NYCFC 2025Imagn

    17New York City FC

    Prior Ranking: 20

    Result: Defeated FC CIncinnati 1-0

Ramifications: Huge result for the Pigeons against one of the league's best. A Julian Fernandez goal in the ninth minute proved to be the difference between, as the 21-year-old Argentine bagged the winner. That's two straight 1-0 wins for NYCFC and their third win in their last four.

  • Noah Eile RBNYImagn

    16New York Red Bulls

    Prior Ranking: 10

Result: Lost to Inter Miami 4-1

Ramifications: An evening to forget for Sandro Schwarz's men. Just completely outclassed on the road, RBNY had very little for them going forward, and in the midfield, Miami essentially took Emil Forsberg out of the match.

  • 15Austin FC

    Prior Ranking: 9

    Result: Lost to MNUFC 3-0

Ramifications: Battered by the Loons in front of their own fans, Austin had nothing going for them. They had 64.3 percent possession and nearly doubled Minnesota's completed passes, but they barely touched the final-third.

Perhaps a bit of luck went MNUFC's way, as Minnesota scored three goals off an xG of .8, but Nico Estevez will know they have to be better.

  • Hany Mukhtar Nashville SCImagn

    14Nashville SC

    Prior Ranking: 14

    Result: Drew Atlanta 1-1

Ramifications: A good point on the road. Mercedes Benz Stadium is never an easy venue, and they should absolutely be content with a draw. Where they might be a hit unhappy is how dominant they were during the second half - and as a result - three points was there for the taking.

They sported an xG of 2.2 and over the final 70 minutes, had 69 percent possession of the ball.

  • 13New England Revolution

    Prior Ranking: 19

    Result: Defeated Toronto FC 2-0

Ramifications: It really seem as if the Revs have turned over a new leaf. That's four straight wins, four straight clean sheets and 15 points out of a possible 18 over the last six matches. It's a remarkable turnaround, and Caleb Porter deserves the credit.

It was hard to see anything coming of the season after the start they had, but he figured it out, and they are cruising.

  • 12Charlotte FC

    Prior Ranking: 8

    Result: Lost to Columbus 4-2

Ramifications: A real wake up call for them. CLT needs more from their stars, on both ends of the pitch. Patrick Agyemang has just two goals this MLS season, and is really struggling in the final-third with goal-scoring chances. Notably, though, they were without Pep Biel, arguably their best player this season - and it showed.

Charlotte have now lost two in a row. Of their four losses on the campaign, two of have come against teams above them in the Eastern Conference standings. If they want to compete with the best they have to learn to beat them.

  • 11San Diego FC

    Prior Ranking: 18

    Result: Defeated FC Dallas 5-0

Ramifications: SDFC needed a turnaround result, and boy did they get it. What a performance from all involved. They absolutely smacked FCD, and it was Chucky Lozano's best game yet for the expansion side, as the Mexico international bagged a brace.

  • 10Los Angeles FC

    Prior Ranking: 15

    Result: Defeated Houston 2-0

Ramifications: Denis Bouanga finally found his confidence, and as a result, the rest of LAFC seem to have, too. Nathan Ordaz opened the scoring and Jeremy Ebobisse finished it, with what was a relative full team performance. Of note? Olivier Giroud was an unused substitute.

  • 9Seattle Sounders

    Prior Ranking: 11

    Result: Defeated CITY 4-1

Ramifications: Brian Schmetzer figured out what switch to flip to put their season back on track. Four goals against a really solid defense such as CITY's is no easy feat, but Seattle are playing some of the best soccer in all of MLS at the moment.

Their unexpected hero of late, Danny Musovski, has scored in each of their last four games and they're really starting to look like a competitor in the West.

  • 8Portland Timbers

    Prior Ranking: 6

Result: Lost to San Jose 4-1

Ramifications: A real tough one for the Timbers. SJ changed shape, and they were immediately caught off guard. Once the momentum for the hosts hit, there was nothing they could do about it. It was their first loss since March 8. Portland had a fantastic run, and this just feels like a bump in the road. No need to worry.

  • 7Orlando City

    Prior Ranking: 7

    Result: Drew Chicago 0-0

Ramifications: With their fourth scoreless draw of the campaign, Orlando are now eight games unbeaten and on a streak of five straight shutouts. However, during the stretch, they've scored just 11 goals - and four of those came in one game.

Their attack isn't good enough at the moment, with a stout defense and brilliant goalkeeping, they've been able to afford that. How long can that continue?

  • 6Minnesota United

    Prior Ranking: 12

    Result: Defeated Austin FC 3-0

Ramifications: Fantastic road performance. A lucky early goal from a Brad Stuver goalkeeping error gave them the initial lead before Anthony Markanich headed home off a set piece - and then a worldie of a volley from Joaquin Pereyra secured them all three points.

Minnesota are up to second in the West, and continue to win games without the ball at their feet.

  • Miles Robinson FC CincinnatiImagn

    5FC Cincinnati

    Prior Ranking: 2

    Result: Lost to NYCFC 1-0

Ramifications: Definitely a tough result for FCC. They registered just 1.2 xG on 14 shot attempts, which is not good enough for a team of their caliber. Pat Noonan will want a reset.

  • 4Philadelphia Union

    Prior Ranking: 5

    Result: Defeated CF Montreal 2-1

Ramifications: Great performance from Philly on the road in Canada. A second-minute goal from Indiana Vassilev and a late winner from Mikael Uhre secured all three points to send them up to second place in the East. That's now three straight wins for Bradley Carnell's men.

  • 3Inter Miami

    Prior Ranking: 4

    Result: Defeated RBNY 4-1

Ramifications: Great result for Miami, and a good bounce back after losing three straight matches across all competitions. Messi and Suarez both managed to get on the scoresheet, and the Herons are up to fourth in the East.

Javier Mascherano's constantly changing midfield choices are a bit bewildering, though. He needs to figure out his XI and believe in it - not switch it out constantly.

  • 2Columbus Crew

    Prior Ranking: 3

    Result: Defeated Charlotte FC 4-2

Ramifications: Just a fantastic performance. CLT were one of MLS' top performers to begin the season, and putting four past them is a sign of where Columbus sits in comparison to Dean Smith's men.

Four-different scorers highlighted the showing, while notably, Daniel Gazdag did not even play. Wilfried Nancy continues to impress.

  • Jayden Nelson Vancouver WhitecapsImagn

    1Vancouver Whitecaps

    Prior Ranking: 1

    Result: Defeated RSL 2-1

Ramifications: Without Brian White available, the Whitecaps held off an in-form RSL side propelled by Diego Luna. A brilliant goal from Jayden Nelson, and a winner from Tristan Blackmon late secured all three points in what was their fifth game since April 19.

Match congestion aside, they're playing some absolutely fantastic soccer of late, and deserve all the credit.
