What countries have confirmed their plans to bid to host Euro 2028?

The United Kingdom and Ireland announced their plans to bid to host Euro 2028 in February, while also confirming plans to scrap their bid to host World Cup 2030.

This means that England, Scotland, Northern Ireland, Wales and Republic of Ireland are proposing a joint bid.

They said in a statement: "Following an extensive feasibility study, which assessed the potential opportunities in international football, the football associations of the Republic of Ireland, England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales have agreed to focus on a bid to host UEFA Euro 2028, the third-largest sports event in the world.

"The feasibility study included an analysis of the economic impact, the political football landscape and likely costs of hosting major international tournaments. On balance, the five associations have decided to focus solely on an official bid to host UEFA Euro 2028, and have agreed not to bid for the 2030 FIFA World Cup."

Romania, Greece, Bulgaria and Serbia announced their plans for a joint bid in February 2019, for both Euro 2028 and World Cup 2030.

Turkey announced their bid to host Euro 2028 in August 2019, having bid unsuccessfully to host the tournament five times in previous years: in 2008, 2012, 2016, 2020 and 2024.

When will the Euro 2028 host be announced?

The host – or hosts – of Euro 2028 will be announced on September 2023.

Do all host countries automatically qualify for the European Championships?

It is not currently known if multiple host countries will automatically qualify for Euro 2028 if they are awarded the bid.

The United States, Mexico and Canada successfully bid to host World Cup 2026 but FIFA have not yet confirmed the qualification process for the tournament. It is also possible that all three countries would qualify for the tournament through the regular process.

The FIFA Council is expected to decide which hosts, if any, will receive a direct path of qualification to the tournament.

The 2002 World Cup hosted by Japan and South Korea was the last time that a tournament's hosts did not have to play qualification matches, as they qualified automatically as hosts.

Where will Euro 2024 take place?

Euro 2024 has been confirmed to take place in Germany, from June 14 to July 14.
