  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Vanni Sartini's magic in the Canadian Championship continues as the manager led his Vancouver Whitecaps to a third successive Canadian Championship after beating Toronto FC 4-2 on penalties (0-0 FT).

Toronto had more chances and possession than Vancouver, but couldn't convert -- failing to get past Caps goalkeeper Isaac Boehmer despite seven shots on target from the Reds.

Bjørn Inge Utvik would prove heroic for Vancouver, converting the team's fourth penalty to ice the win.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

The win cements Sartini's legacy as arguably MLS's most underrated manager. Vancouver continues to gain success under the Italian's guidance despite modest resources. It's a stark contrast to the competition's other finalist.

Toronto FC have a rollercoaster season and will have increased pressure to reach the MLS playoffs in John Herdman's first season at the helm. Fair or not, the Reds' sky-high payroll and top-end stars raises expectations to reach the marquee part of the season.
