According to a report by Mundo Deportivo, Spanish women’s football clubs have been left furious after Real Madrid opposed the Spanish Football Federation's (RFEF) proposal to host the Supercopa de Espana Femenina in Miami. The plan, which aimed to expand the competition’s global profile, would have seen participating clubs earn guaranteed income of around €150,000 each. Madrid’s veto has now halted what could have been a landmark event for the women’s game in Spain.
The decision came after meetings between the RFEF and the four participating teams, Real Madrid, Barcelona, Athletic Club and Atletico Madrid, where Madrid stood alone in rejecting the idea. Clubs view the refusal as a major setback to the league’s long-term growth, given the financial and promotional potential of the American market.
