  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Hojlund arrived at United in 2023 with a price tag of £72 million ($97m) after impressing in Serie A with Atalanta. Despite that hefty investment, he has struggled to deliver consistently for the Red Devils, managing only 26 goals in 95 matches across all competitions. Hojlund's tally in 2025 has been particularly underwhelming, with just three goals to his name, netted against Leicester City, Bournemouth, and Athletic Club.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Scholes believes the club’s reliance on a single young striker has stifled Hojlund’s development, and he has urged the club to invest in two experienced centre-forwards to help him - Victor Osimhen of Napoli and Sporting Lisbon's Viktor Gyokeres. Speaking on The Overlap Fan Debate, brought to you by Sky Bet, the United legend offered a passionate defence of the 22-year-old while claiming his loss of form stems from a lack of confidence.

  • WHAT SCHOLES SAID

"I'd keep Hojlund," Scholes insisted. "I know he's not been great but he's a 22-year-old kid who has been asked to play centre-forward for Manchester United on his own for the last two years. I know he's not been great but he's a 22-year-old kid who has been asked to play centre-forward for Manchester United on his own for the last two years. He's had to play every week. He's the only one there. He's a 22-year-old kid. With the way they play, Man United should have at least three top centre-forwards, and I'd bring him into that."

The former United midfielder believes adding both Osimhen and Gyokeres would create a competitive and supportive environment that would allow Hojlund to develop without being overwhelmed. "Get Osimhen and Gyokeres. Hojlund, he's struggled like mad of late, especially, but he's not got the chance to sit down and watch," he added.

"If a striker is not doing well, no confidence, the manager sits you down and says, 'have a look, get a bit of hunger back, a bit of feeling back for the game.' We all know he has got centre-forward qualities, we've seen it. Not enough, I know that, but if he has got experience around him...Say he had Andy Cole and Dwight Yorke around him, it'd bring him on so much. He's been absolutely flogged to death. People forget how old he is. A lot of it is confidence."

    WHAT NEXT FOR HOJLUND?

With United reportedly open to offers in the region of £30m ($41m) for Hojlund, a summer exit is not off the table. Ruben Amorim has already moved to bolster his frontline by signing Matheus Cunha from Wolves, while United are also being strongly linked with Brentford's Bryan Mbeumo.
