'Pathetically embarrassing' - Liverpool fans tear into Arne Slot after second successive defeat as Dutchman told he 'spent £500m to make his side look worse'

The Reds came into the game looking to move on from their shock 2-1 loss to Crystal Palace at the weekend. However, in Turkiye, the Reds were beaten 1-0 by Galatasaray, as a Victor Osimhen penalty proved decisive. The Reds had 16 shots on goal but only managed five on target, while they also had 68% possession, and completed over double the passes, but were unable to turn it into something tangible in the final third of the pitch. It has led to questions from supporters, who appear to believe that Slot is overseeing a dramatic downturn in quality at Anfield, especially after a huge summer spend that saw them splash over £100 million ($134m) on both Alexander Isak and Florian Wirtz individually. 

Liverpool fan @SeanDOlfc said: "This is the worst Liverpool side since we lost 4-1 to Napoli with Arthur Melo."

And @joe_mediano added: "It's (Brendan) Rodgers level bad, not seen a less effective side defensively or offensively at this level in years."

Another supporter, @LFCLaurie, said: "Rivals deserve to laugh at us because to spend £500m and be this bad is pathetically embarrassing."

Slot has also been questioned by fans, @AlissonEra posted: "Slot needs to be questioned. Can’t spend that amount of money and play like that."

And @konaldo7_ added: "So Slot spent 500 million to make his side look worse."

Finally, @Kevbentley said: "This is ALL on slot. Questions need to be asked of him to be honest. Players haven't got a clue what they're doing and that's his fault. Personally I think he's over rated. We played klopp football last season. He's changed it and ruined us."

After the game, Slot claimed the margins in the defeat were "small", although he did make it clear that he felt the performance was "different" to the showing that saw them defeated at Selhurst Park. 

He said: "Again, disappointed. For me, this was a different performance on and off the ball [than Crystal Palace]. First half we played quite well and had a big chance to go 1-0 up.

"It is difficult to compare this situation to before. We are sometimes a bit out-smarted in situations like this and I cannot blame Dominik Szoboszlai for the situation. They make a 20% penalty a 100% penalty, which is very smart from them.

"We are not so far [off the level shown last season]. This is sometimes what the schedule can bring, Galatasaray is not a simple game. We now play Chelsea away, a difficult game.

"The margins are small and they were last season. For the second time in a row we are on the wrong side.

"I saw a lot of things in the first half, but the second half was much less. I don't think in the second half there was a lot of playing time, their striker was on the floor four or five times. It was difficult to get momentum in the game."

The Reds face a tricky trip to Stamford Bridge to face Chelsea in the Premier League this weekend before the international break. They also face Manchester United after the resumption of domestic duties. In the Champions League, the club still face games against Eintracht Frankfurt, Real Madrid, PSV Eindhoven, Inter, Marseille, and Qarabag, so there is plenty of time for Slot's side to save face after their latest dire display.  

Despite questions over the club's style, and their performances this season ahead of their defeat to Palace, the Reds still sit top of the Premier League table, having won five of their opening six games, and lost only one. They also won their opening game in Europe, beating Atletico Madrid 3-2. They do not need to panic, but it is clear doubts are beginning to creep in amongst the Anfield faithful.
