Following their defeat at the City Ground, United's loss tally reached 21 and thus became their fourth worst year in history. Per Opta, only in 1930 (28), 1972 (25) and 1921 (24) have they suffered more defeats in a single calendar year. The misery is compounded only further when reasons for optimism are dampened by poor league form. The Red Devils have lost as many games (9) this season in the Premier League as they did last - their worst start since 1989-90.
