Leeds United's worst signings of all time

Signed on loan from AC Milan in 2003 having helped Brazil win the World Cup just 12 months previously, Roque Junior prompted great excitement when he arrived at Elland Road.

A disastrous debut against Leicester City set the tone, however, with the Whites conceding 24 times in his seven appearances on their way to relegation from the Premier League.

Having played a key role in Manchester United's resurgence under Sir Alex Ferguson in the early 1990s, Sharpe became Leeds' joint-record signing when he arrived for £4.5 million in 1996.

He struggled to make an impact, however, and after sitting out the entire 1997-98 season with an injury he was cast aside by David O'Leary.

Injured during his first training session with the club following his arrival from Luton Town in the summer of 2006, Nicholls did not get off to the best of starts at Elland Road.

He was, however, made club captain just months later following Dennis Wise's arrival as manager, only to get sent off during his first match with the armband.

By March 2007 he had been dropped having requested to be sold back to Luton, and upon his return to Kenilworth Road he enraged Leeds fans further by stating the Hatters were a bigger club than his former employers.

Signed for £6 million from Coventry City in 1999, a player who had previously played solely as a central striker was forced out wide by the weight of top forwards available to David O'Leary.

He spent 18 months at Elland Road, scoring six goals, before being sold to Manchester City for just over half what Leeds paid for him.

Signed as a back-up to Andy Lonergan in 2011, Rachubka was forced into action after the Leeds No.1 picked up an injury early in the season.

After a series of error-strewn performances, the final nail in Rachubka's coffin came in a 5-0 home defeat to former club Blackpool, with manager Simon Grayson forced to replace his goalkeeper after he was at fault for three of the first four goals.

Having been Sweden's shining light during their run to the semi-finals of both Euro 1992 and the 1994 World Cup, forward Brolin was plucked from Parma in November 1995.

Three months later, though, he was left out of the team for failing to pull his weight defensively, and less than a year after arriving in England he was loaned out to Zurich.

The first signing of the Thomas Christiansen era, Klich was reported to be a metronomic midfielder who had impressed for Twente in the previous campaign.

It soon became apparent that the Championship was not the right level for him, however, and six months later he is back in the Eredivisie on loan at Utrecht.

Signed from Chelsea for £1.6 million in the summer of 1999, 24-year-old Granville was seen as a potential international full-back.

He made just nine appearances for Leeds, however, before being sold to Manchester City 18 months later.

Having starred for Derby County, Johnson was being tipped as the future of England's midfield, and as such Leeds forked out £7 million for his services.

Injuries plagued his time in West Yorkshire, though, and he made just 54 league appearances in four seasons with the club. His massive wages, meanwhile, are cited as the best illustration of the mass overspending that crippled the Whites during the early 21st century.

With Leeds crying out for more width during the 2013-14 season they brought in Kebe on loan from Crystal Palace during the January transfer window.

He had shone for Reading during his previous stint in the Championship and was seen as the ideal mid-season signing but flopped badly and soon became a punchline for many supporters.

A goalscorer in the 1976 League Cup final as an 18-year-old and voted the PFA Young Player of the Year at the end of the same season, Barnes had the world at his feet when coming through the ranks at Manchester United.

Though sold to West Brom three years later, he arrived at Leeds for £750,000 in 1981 still with his reputation relatively intact. That did not last long, however, with Barnes scoring just one league goal in 30 games as the Whites were relegated to the Second Division.

He immediately requested a transfer, though it was the best part of six months until he was eventually sold to Coventry City.

Signed during the same January window as Kebe, the former Manchester United winger was expected to add plenty of dynamism to the Leeds line-up.

Originally signed on loan to circumvent FIFA rules, Stewart agreed a three-year permanent deal that he would sign at the end of the season. So bad were his performances, though, that the deal was cancelled. Stewart successfully sued the club for £750,000.

A legend at Liverpool, Rush arrived at Elland Road as a 34-year-old who was starting to wind down his career.

Needless to say he could not live up to his previous levels, scoring just three goals in 36 appearances before being released at the end of his sole season at Elland Road.

Livermore left Millwall for Leeds in 2006 having just been named the Lions' Player of the Year, with the Whites forking out £500,000 for the midfielder.

He spent just 10 days as a Leeds player, however, with manager Kevin Blackwell selling him to Hull City having managed to bring in other players in Livermore's position!

Imposing striker Strandli joined Leeds in 1993 during their unsuccessful title defence having been a shining light in his native Norway.

Despite scoring on his debut, though, he struggled to adapt to the English game and left just a year later having contributed two goals in 16 appearances.
