Jobe Bellingham criticism baffles Niko Kovac as coach hails English midfielder's 'very good impression' at Borussia Dortmund

Dortmund head coach Kovac has strongly defended Bellingham following criticism of the midfielder’s mistake in Der Klassiker against Bayern Munich. After coming on as a substitute in the 73rd minute, he was involved in the build up to Bayern’s second goal, scored by their left-footed star Michael Olise, after misjudging a clearance inside his own box.

The error drew sharp reactions from fans and sections of the British media, with The Sun describing it as a “horror mistake”. However, Kovac has made it clear he has no doubts about the young midfielder’s talent or mentality. “I don’t understand the criticism at all. Jobe is making a very, very good impression,” said the Dortmund boss, brushing aside the noise surrounding the youngster.

Kovac emphasised that he had “no problem” starting Bellingham in their upcoming European fixture against Copenhagen. “He’s training well, learning fast, and has the right attitude,” he added. Dortmund will look to bounce back after their first defeat of the season when they travel to Denmark on Tuesday.

In his recent press conference ahead of the Denmark challenge, Kovac doubled down on his support for the Englishman, stressing that one mistake should not overshadow his promising adaptation to life in Germany.

The 52-year-old coach highlighted that competition for places in midfield is fierce, with players like Julian Brandt, Marcel Sabitzer, and Felix Nmecha all performing well. “I know what Jule can do. In Mainz, he came out of nowhere and single-handedly decided the game. Jule will play from the start again in the long run. I’m happy to have him,” Kovac explained.

Bellingham, at just 20 has brought a steep learning curve, though his cameo against Bayern was overshadowed by the late error, club officials and teammates have reportedly rallied around him, recognising his potential and commitment.

Bellingham, who has already featured in several Bundesliga matches, is adjusting to a more tactical and physical style of play. Dortmund see him as part of their long-term rebuild under Kovac, especially given his technical quality and versatility. His integration also carries symbolic weight, following in the footsteps of his older brother, Jude Bellingham, who previously starred for the same club before joining Real Madrid.

Dortmund now shift focus to their Champions League group stage fixture against Copenhagen on Tuesday evening. The German side sit on four points after two games, having drawn 4-4 with Juventus and defeated Athletic Club 4-1, and will be eager to return to winning ways after their weekend loss to Bayern.

Their opponents, Copenhagen, are struggling both domestically and in Europe, the Danish champions have gone three matches without a win and are yet to register a victory in the Champions League group stage, following a 2-2 draw with Bayer Leverkusen and a 2-0 defeat to Qarabag. Injuries to Magnus Mattsson and Rodrigo Huescas have further weakened their squad, while former Dortmund player Thomas Delaney remains a doubt.

Kovac’s men, meanwhile, will be without Emre Can and Julien Duranville through injury. Aaron Anselmino could make his return to the matchday squad. The coach may also consider rotating his line up slightly, with Bellingham among those in contention for a start.

Dortmund’s strong unbeaten run may have ended in Der Klassiker, but the campaign remains on track. A win against Copenhagen would not only put them in a commanding position in Group D but also restore confidence ahead of upcoming Bundesliga fixtures.
