While the future of current manager Erik ten Hag remains undecided, ESPN revealed that United have been evaluating potential successors with O'Neil among the shortlisted candidates.

O'Neil, who took the reins at Molineux last August following Julen Lopetegui's departure, has steered Wolves into contention for European qualification this season, building on his successful stint at Bournemouth where he maintained Premier League status during his debut top-flight managerial role last season. Sources also indicate that the 40-year-old has been informed of United's interest, with key figures from the club expressing a keenness to engage in discussions regarding his intentions.

United are keeping a tab on other managers as well including England manager Gareth Southgate, Brighton's Roberto De Zerbi, and Brentford's Thomas Frank.

The former Middlesbrough, Portsmouth, and West Ham United midfielder commenced his coaching journey with Liverpool U-18s under the tenure of Michael Edwards, who previously collaborated with O'Neil during their time at Portsmouth in the Premier League during the early 2000s. He penned a three-year contract upon joining Wolves last summer, which could pose a compensation quandary for United if they opt to pursue him for a coaching role.
