In an incredible crossover, Flamengo defender Leo Ortiz made a surprise appearance at the NFL Draft, announcing one of the New England Patriots' picks. The Brazil international appeared as a part of the league's international outreach program and announced the Patriots’ 137th pick, where they selected defensive tackle Joshua Farmer. Ortiz's participation represents the NFL's strategic push into Brazil, South America's largest market, where American football has experienced significant growth in recent years.

Leveraging prominent figures from the country's most popular sport demonstrates a sophisticated approach to market entry and the NFL has intensified efforts to expand its international presence, with Brazil emerging as a key target market. This is, however, the first of a kind crossover as Ortiz becomes the first soccer player to cross lines and participate in the other form of football.

Following his NFL Draft appearance, Ortiz will be back in action with Flamengo for their Brasileirão and Copa Libertadores campaigns. The Brazilian giants currently sit in second place behind Palmeiras on the Serie A table and face Corinthians on April 27 before a Copa do Brazil fixture against Botafogo PB on May 1.
