  • One Three Lions cap earned in 2020
  • Made impressive start to life in France
  • Fierce competition for playmaking spots
  • WHAT HAPPENED?

The 22-year-old forward earned his solitary senior cap for the Three Lions against Iceland back in 2020. He was sent home from that squad after breaking Covid quarantine rules, while off-field issues have prevented him from coming back into contention for selection since then.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Greenwood did, however, star on loan at La Liga side Getafe last season – winning their Player of the Year award – and has netted five goals for Marseille in Ligue 1 since completing a £27 million ($36m) transfer from Old Trafford.

  • WHAT WADDLE SAID

Lee Carsley is currently filling the role of England boss on an interim basis, following the departure of Gareth Southgate, with former Three Lions and Marseille star Chris Waddle telling FlashScore if Greenwood could earn himself an international recall: “He's a very good player. He’s got the number 10 shirt and England seem to be producing a lot of good number 10s these days. He's come out of the blocks very quick, started scoring goals from the off. The new England manager will be taking notice of this.

“We all know the French league is quite strong, but it's not as strong as three or four other leagues in Europe now, you've got to take that into account. It is not as strong as the Premier League, La Liga or the Bundesliga. But all he can do is do what he's doing in Marseille. Score goals and play well.”

    WHAT NEXT?

There has been talk of Greenwood switching allegiance to Jamaica, with their national side currently managed by former United coach and ex-England boss Steve McClaren. If high standards can be maintained in France, then the flying winger should have plenty of options to consider when it comes to his long-term future with club and country.
