  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Erik ten Hag’s tenure has ended after two-and-a-half years, during which United's performance in the Premier League reached historic lows. And following a 2-1 loss to West Ham, the Dutchman was relieved of his duties. Stepping in on an interim basis, former United striker Ruud van Nistelrooy successfully turned the tide to an extent, with three wins and a draw bridging the transition period before Amorim’s appointment.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Fernandes and Amorim never shared the dressing room at Sporting, as the midfielder left the Lisbon club for United before the manager took over. However, the midfielder has keenly observed Amorim’s achievements from afar and believes that his connection with players sets him apart as a coach capable of inspiring success.

  • WHAT FERNANDES SAID

In an interview with MUTV, Fernandes said: "For me what stands out for me is the connection he has with players. When the manager is going from your club in the middle of the season with all the things they have still to win, you see the way they say goodbye to him, the way they make him feel part of the team and the way they treat him, it shows he's a great character and he is someone that gives his all to the players."

Fernandes added that Amorim’s influence is particularly evident in how he shields players from criticism and supports them through challenges, a trait Fernandes hopes Amorim will bring to Old Trafford.

"I have seen many moments where players were struggling and he goes to the press conference to defend his players to give them the best opportunity to shine," he said. "He had a really young team so he needed to do that, hopefully, he can do the same with us."

    WHAT NEXT FOR AMORIM?

Given United’s recent struggles, Amorim’s focus on motivating his players could be instrumental in resetting the team’s mentality. His first official game as head coach will take place on November 24, when the team faces Ipswich Town in an away Premier League match at Portman Road.
