Borussia Dortmund star Mats Hummels sends brutal 'farmers' dig to Premier League after four English sides exit European competition in three days

On Wednesday, Hummels' former club Bayern Munich dumped Arsenal out of the competition, securing a 1-0 win at the Allianz Arena to triumph 3-2 on aggregate, while Dortmund beat Atletico to progress to the semi-finals too. Now, the German international has had a pop at the English Premier League, subverting the 'Farmer's League' stereotype thrown towards the Bundesliga by some English fans with the line 'Good harvesting this week my fellow farmers'.

Premier League sides have performed well in Europe in recent seasons, with Manchester City winning last season's Champions League, Liverpool narrowly missing out to Madrid in the previous year's final, and Chelsea winning the competition in 2021. But 2024 has been a different story - all English clubs have now been knocked out of the UCL and the Europa League, while three German clubs have progressed to the respective tournaments' semi-finals. Europa Conference League semi-finalists Aston Villa remain the Premier League's sole representatives in Europe.

Hummels said: "Good harvesting this week my fellow farmers", twisting the farmer's league stereotype around on his English rivals.

Dortmund face a stern test in the semi-finals of the Champions League, with PSG standing in their way of a first UCL final since the 2012/13 season, when they were led there by Jurgen Klopp. With the league title already wrapped up by Bayer Leverkusen, a European trophy will be the main goal of both Dortmund and their rivals Bayern Munich.
