Arsenal make huge breakthrough in protracted transfer negotiations for Bologna's Italy star Riccardo Calafiori

According to The Athletic, the Gunners have re-established contact with Bologna in their pursuit of Calafiori and following further discussions, the two clubs have reached closer to finalising a deal that has been in the works for several weeks. The transfer fee for Calafiori is expected to be in the range of €50-€54 million (£42m/$54.5m - £45.5m/$59m). While the exact details of the bonuses are still being negotiated, both clubs are optimistic about reaching a total agreement soon.

Earlier in the transfer window, Juventus was also in the race to sign Calafiori. However, the Turin-based club withdrew their interest as Bologna kept increasing their asking price. This withdrawal has left Arsenal as the frontrunners in securing Calafiori's signature.

Calafiori is believed to have agreed to personal terms with Arsenal, including a five-year contract. The Gunners are hopeful that the 22-year-old's transfer can be completed before they embark on their pre-season tour to the United States on Sunday. The Italian club acquired Calafiori from Basel for £3.4 million last summer, and the Swiss club is entitled to 50 per cent of any profit made from his sale.

Mikel Arteta allegedly views Calafiori as a key addition to the squad. The Italian defender is capable of playing both as a left-back and an inverted full-back, which would allow him to slot into midfield positions when needed.
