PERMUTATIONS: What Orlando Pirates need to qualify for Caf Champions League quarter-finals

Premier Soccer League (PSL) giants Orlando Pirates know exactly what they must do against Horoya AC in order to guarantee qualification for the quarter-finals of the 2018/19 Caf Champions League.

The Buccaneers suffered a blow to their hopes of reaching the knockout stages when they drew 2-2 against Zimbabwean champions FC Platinum at the Orlando Stadium last weekend.

The result saw Pirates remain third on the group standings - a point behind Guinean giants Horoya, who succumbed to a 2-0 defeat to defending champions Esperance de Tunis away.

The Tunisian giants Esperance secured their place in the quarter-finals as Group B winners with a game to spare as they are five points above second-placed Horoya with one round of matches remaining.

The runners-up spot is still up for grabs, while fourth-placed Platinum have already been eliminated from the competition after accumulating only two points from five games.

Pirates can nevertheless secure progression to the last eight if they overcome Horoya when they meet in Guinea's capital city, Conakry on Saturday.

A victory at the Stade du 28 Septembre over HAC will see Bucs finish the group stage campaign with nine points - two above Horoya, who would then bow out of the tournament.

The Soweto giants would reach the quarter-finals for the first time since 2013 where they went all the way to the final and they lost to Egyptian football heavyweights, Al Ahly.

A draw or defeat against HAC would send Pirates crashing out of the competition which they won in 1995 after defeating Ivorian giants ASEC Mimosas in a thrilling final.

However, defeating Horoya at home is a mammoth task as the record 16-time Guinée Championnat National champions boast an impressive home record in the Champions League.

They are undefeated in their last 14 matches at home in the tournament which means Pirates will have to pull out all the stops to secure a win in West Africa having defeated Horoya 3-0 at home three months ago.
