Kenya’s representatives in the continental championships, Gor Mahia and Kariobangi Sharks will have to wait a little longer before they know their respective Caf Championship League and Caf Confederation Cup opponents.
The draw for the preliminary rounds of the competitions failed to take place last Saturday as was initially planned, leaving teams eagerly waiting to know whom they will be facing when the competitions kicks-off on November 27/28, 2018.
The delay was occasioned by the fact that the new season will kick off before the conclusion of the 2018 campaign that is set to end on December 1 as AS Vita Club from DR Congo takes on Morocco side or Raja Club Athletic in the final.
The change of calendar by national associations which is in line with Caf's recommendation also played a part in the new changes. “Following the meeting of the Organizing of Interclubs Committee in Rabat on Saturday, November 3, 2018, and because of the specificity of this transitional season due to the change of dates of Interclubs, a decision will be taken by the Committee of Emergency of Confédération Africaine de Football in a short time.
“For this 2018/2019 transitional year, the final of the 2018 Confederation Cup will be played on November 30, December 1st or 2nd, 2018, after the start of the 2018/2019 preliminaries. The winner of the 2018 Confederation Cup, AS Vita Club (DR Congo) or Raja Club Athletic (Morocco), will be only known after the engagement period of the clubs."
Caf also confirmed that no association will be allowed to enter more than one team in the lower tier-Caf Confederation Cup. “In case the holder of the title is in the same time engaged as the champion of the national cup or third of the national league, it will be engaged with only one other representative and will not be replaced by a third club," read a statement from Caf.
Caf’s Executive Committee (Emergency Committee) will soon announce the new dates for the draw.
