San Francisco 49ers vs Jacksonville Jaguars NFL Preview: Team news, betting, tickets, live stream, Fantasy Football and more

The Jacksonville Jaguars travel west to face the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday, Sept. 28, at Levi’s Stadium for a Week 4 clash.

Jacksonville is off to a 2–1 start under new head coach Liam Coen, fresh off a Week 3 win over the Houston Texans.

San Francisco sits at 2–0 and clearly operates at a higher level when Brock Purdy is steering the offense, but Mac Jones has been holding the fort in Purdy's absence.

The 49ers are preparing to get Brock Purdy back under center after a two-game absence, assuming he clears the practice week without setbacks. And truthfully, San Francisco may have little choice but to lean on him, with Mac Jones sidelined by a knee injury.

San Francisco 49ers team news

The 49ers have been dealt a brutal hand on the injury front, and it feels like every week brings another gut punch. George Kittle is parked on IR with a hamstring issue, Brandon Aiyuk is still grinding his way back from that nasty ACL/MCL tear, and the offensive line has taken its own hits with Ben Bartch and Spencer Burford sidelined.

And just when it looked like things couldn’t get worse, they did. The franchise cornerstone himself, Nick Bosa, tore his ACL against Arizona and is out for the year. That’s the kind of blow that shakes the foundation of a defense—and the locker room.

On the flip side, there’s been a surprising lifeline under center. Mac Jones, thrust into the spotlight, has managed the chaos with steady hands, going 53-of-80 for four touchdowns against only one pick. He's nursing an injury of his own, officially questionable, but if he’s cleared, we could be in for a fascinating twist: Jones lining up across from his old team.

There is some light peeking through, though. Brock Purdy is gearing up for a return, slated to grab some first-team reps in practice this week after missing time with a toe injury. Shanahan says it'll be limited work, but if Purdy is trending back, it could be just the spark this battered Niners squad needs.

Jacksonville Jaguars team news

Trevor Lawrence was once touted as the NFL’s next superstar, but the reality hasn’t quite matched the hype. Sure, there have been flashes—none bigger than that dramatic playoff comeback against the Chargers—but the consistency just hasn’t been there. This season has been more of the same.

Through three games, he's posted 671 yards with four touchdowns and four picks, and his decision-making has looked shaky at best. Right now, he feels like a quarterback on the verge of another rough outing. This upcoming matchup against a relentless 49ers defense, despite a few injury setbacks, will be one of his toughest early-season tests.

Brenton Strange and Dyami Brown have combined for 253 receiving yards and a single touchdown, while Brian Thomas Jr. has hauled in seven catches of his own. On the ground, Jacksonville is churning out an impressive 141.7 rushing yards per game, paced by Travis Etienne Jr., who’s already piled up 270 yards and a score.

Defensively, the Jaguars are giving up just 17 points and 292 total yards per outing. Foyesade Oluokun anchors the unit with 23 tackles, Travon Walker has logged two sacks, and Jourdan Lewis has snagged a pair of interceptions.

49ers vs Jaguars Fantasy Football

Through three weeks, Trevor Lawrence (14.7 projected W4 fpts) still hasn’t cracked QB1 territory, finishing QB24, QB15, and QB28. That’s not exactly what fantasy managers signed up for. His first real test against a defense worth its salt came against Houston last week—and the results weren’t pretty. Lawrence hit on just half of his throws, averaging a measly 5.5 yards per attempt.

On the season, he's completing only 55.8% of his passes, the second-worst mark in the league, barely ahead of Cam Ward. At this point, Lawrence is sitting squarely in QB2 land for Week 4, and unless something clicks, that's where he'll stay.

The 49ers, meanwhile, have their own drama. Losing Nick Bosa for the year is a backbreaker. We saw last season how ordinary this defense looked without him, and his absence will test just how sturdy this unit really is.

The quarterback situation is another wrinkle. Brock Purdy (17.6 projected W4 fpts) logged reps in practice most of last week and is inching closer to a return. In Week 1, he posted 16.8 fantasy points (QB16), connecting on 26 of 35 throws (74.3%) for 277 yards, two touchdowns, and a pair of picks. Given the injury chaos around him and a tough Seattle defense, that was a respectable outing—enough to show he’s at least got a safe fantasy floor. If Purdy suits up, he's in the fringe QB1 mix, especially if Jauan Jennings is healthy enough to go.

No matter who's under center, though, the 49ers' sure thing is still Christian McCaffrey (17.6 projected W4 fpts). He's been ridiculous to start the year—fourth in the league in receiving yards across all positions, tied with Davante Adams and ahead of Justin Jefferson. Let that sink in. Add in his production on the ground (14th in rushing yards league-wide), and it’s hard to imagine a more complete fantasy weapon. Put simply, CMC is matchup-proof and remains the crown jewel at running back.

49ers vs Jaguars Game Predictions

This matchup has all the makings of a sneaky gem on this week's NFL slate. The Jacksonville Jaguars have built their early-season success on two pillars: a ball-hawking defense that sits atop the league with nine takeaways, and Liam Coen's revamped rushing attack, which is churning out 141.7 yards per game at an impressive 5.1 yards a pop.

But here comes the real measuring stick. Jacksonville's defense is about to stare down its toughest assignment of the year. Signs point to Brock Purdy suiting up, and even if he's not at 100 percent, and even if his supporting cast is banged up, he's still a bigger headache than the likes of Bryce Young, Jake Browning, or Houston's current offense.

My gut says the Jags finally get burned this week. Don't be shocked if Purdy dials up a couple of haymakers downfield, two of them, at least, landing in the hands of Ricky Pearsall. Expect a low-scoring scrap with neither side lighting up the scoreboard. Something like 20-14 feels about right, even though Jaguars are much healthier at the most important position.
