Miami Dolphins vs New York Jets NFL Preview: Team news, betting, tickets, live stream, Fantasy Football and more

Monday Night Football is serving up another double feature, but let's be honest — this slate isn't exactly prime rib. The opener pits two AFC East strugglers, both still searching for their first taste of victory: the 0-3 Jets and the equally winless Dolphins.

Don’t let the records fool you, though. The Jets' season hasn't been quite as bleak as the standings suggest. Two of their losses came down to a combined four points against the Steelers and Bucs, and their other defeat was at the hands of a powerhouse Bills squad. In short, they've been hanging tough.

Miami, on the other hand, has been nothing short of a train wreck. Sloppy, disorganized, and downright uninspired, the Dolphins look like a team on the brink. If New York can seize the moment, this matchup could hand them their first win of the year — and heap even more misery on a sinking Miami ship.

Miami Dolphins team news

The Dolphins have been nothing short of a sieve on defense, coughing up more than 30 points in every outing so far and sitting dead last in the NFL in scoring defense at 32.3 points per game. The numbers don’t flatter them elsewhere either — they’re 26th in total defense, bleeding 370.3 yards a week.

Offensively, it hasn’t been much prettier. Miami ranks 25th in scoring (18.7 per game), with Tua Tagovailoa throwing five touchdowns but already serving up four interceptions on just 89 attempts. Tyreek Hill remains the lone bright spot, hauling in 15 passes for 198 yards and a score, while rookie De’Von Achane has chipped in 147 rushing yards on 30 carries. But for a team that once prided itself on speed and explosiveness, this group has sputtered out of the gates.

Tagovailoa has taken heat from all corners, including a fiery critique from former MVP Cam Newton, and the pressure won’t ease with more injuries piling up. Corners Storm Duck (ankle) and Jason Marshall Jr. (hamstring) sat out Thursday, while Darren Waller (shoulder) and Jaylen Waddle (shoulder) were limited. Safety Ifeatu Melifonwu (calf), at least, was a full participant.

New York Jets team news

The Jets may be getting a much-needed boost under center as Justin Fields (concussion) appears on track to return after sitting out last week’s heartbreaking 29-27 loss to the Buccaneers. Fields went down in Week 2 against Buffalo, but after logging a full practice Thursday — though not yet fully cleared from protocol — he looks poised to reclaim the huddle. Head coach Aaron Glenn made it clear: if Fields is cleared, he’s the starter.

In limited action so far, Fields has thrown for 245 yards and a score on just 33 attempts, while adding his trademark dual-threat spark with 97 rushing yards and two touchdowns. Backup Tyrod Taylor kept the offense afloat in Tampa, throwing for 197 yards and two TDs while tacking on 48 on the ground, but the Jets clearly missed Fields’ explosiveness.

Injuries, however, continue to pile up elsewhere. Linebacker Jermaine Johnson II and newly-acquired corner Jarvis Brownlee Jr. both sat out Thursday with ankle issues. Meanwhile, Kene Nwangwu (hamstring), Josh Reynolds (hamstring), Jay Tufele (illness), and Tony Adams (hip) were all limited, leaving New York’s depth chart looking thinner than it should for Week 4.

Dolphins vs Jets Fantasy Football

The Jets head into Monday night with a quarterback question hanging over them. Justin Fields (15.2 projected W4 fpts) remains in concussion protocol, and while the expectation is he'll be cleared in time, there's still the chance we see another week of Tyrod Taylor if things drag out. Head coach Aaron Glenn has already made it clear — if Fields is healthy, the job is his.

On the other sideline, Tua Tagovailoa (15.1 projected W4 fpts) has yet to crack the top half of fantasy quarterback scoring this season, limping along as QB31, QB17, and QB19 through three weeks. His latest outing — an ugly 4.3 yards per attempt in Buffalo — did little to inspire confidence. He's not startable as a locked-in QB1 right now, but given the matchup, he’s at least a viable QB2 flier with upside.

The Miami backfield continues to revolve around De’Von Achane (14.0 projected W4 fpts), who went for 62 rushing yards and caught 7 of 9 passes for 29 yards last week. He ceded a bit of work to Ollie Gordon, but Achane remains the guy you want, especially in PPR formats. He’s a locked-in starter with touchdown upside if the red-zone touches stay fluid.

Breece Hall (11.3 projected W4 fpts), meanwhile, is trending in the opposite direction. After exploding for 145 yards in Week 1, he's been stuck in neutral, just 88 combined rushing yards over the past two weeks. That makes him a volatile RB2 who could boom or bust depending on game flow.

The passing games are where things get interesting. Garrett Wilson (9.6 fpts) bounced back with 10 catches on 13 targets for 84 yards and a score last week, clear proof that when the Jets actually look his way, he produces. For Miami, Tyreek Hill (9.5 fpts) isn't quite putting up WR1 numbers yet, but two straight top-20 weeks and another touchdown keep him firmly in WR2 territory with plenty of ceiling. Jaylen Waddle (7.6) hasn't topped six targets in a game, but he’s found the end zone two weeks in a row, making him a matchup-dependent WR3 in what could be a shootout.

Elsewhere in the Jets' receiver room, Allen Lazard snagged a touchdown but was barely on the field, running just 12 routes. Arian Smith served as the WR2 with heavy snaps but no production, while Tyler Johnson chipped in 32 yards. None of them are fantasy starters outside of deep leagues.

One wrinkle: Darren Waller is set to make his Dolphins debut. He hasn't put together a full season since 2020, so expectations should be tempered, but his presence gives Miami another chess piece. Rookie Mason Taylor continues to run plenty of routes (74.3%), but with only six catches for 43 yards so far, he's not fantasy-viable outside of single-game DFS dart throws.

Dolphins vs Jets Game Predictions

It's a clash of the winless on Monday night, but both the Jets and Dolphins have reason to keep their heads up. Miami pushed the Bills far harder than anyone predicted last week and now gets the luxury of extra prep time. The Jets, meanwhile, nearly pulled off a miracle comeback, storming back from 23-6 in the fourth before falling by a single point. The hinge of this matchup? Whether New York's ground game can bulldoze Miami's shaky run defense. And let's be blunt: if the Dolphins stumble here, this could very well mark Mike McDaniel's swan song on the sideline.
