The Esteghlal midfielder saw red in a 1-0 win over Al Ain for an off-the-ball incident in which an opponent went tumbling to the ground after little to no contact from Esmaeili.
Despite that dubious decision, Esteghlal still will carry a one-goal lead into next week's last-16 second leg.
