Sweden v England: Why the World Cup might not be coming home

The English may have banished some demons with their penalty shoot-out win over Colombia, but Sweden loom as a fresh cause for concern.

Having topped a group containing reigning champions Germany, conceded just two goals to date in Russia and with a fine record in World Cup quarter-finals, the Swedish cannot be under-estimated.

The Three Lions on the other hand only scraped past Tunisia in their opening game, fell 1-0 in a dead rubber to Belgium and couldn't hang on in regular time against Colombia in the round of 16.

While English fans should have reason to hope a 52-year World Cup drought is a chance of being quenched after ending up on a favourable side of the draw, Sweden shape as a very stern test.

Aside from a dramatic late 2-1 loss to Germany, the Swedish have looked near infallible in Russia with goalkeeper Robin Olsen keeping three clean sheets to date - a joint record for a Sweden keeper at the tournament.

They have struggled up front however, only seeing off Switzerland thanks to deflected strike with Marcus Berg's 13 shots without a goal the most taken by a player without scoring in Russia.

Sweden v England

England in contrast, are yet to keep a clean sheet but are compensated by current Golden Boot leader Harry Kane.

Kane has scored from all six of his shots on target at the World Cup and is tied with Gary Lineker for most goals scored by an English player at the tournament.

Should he score against Sweden, Kane would become just the third Three Lions player to score in seven consecutive games for his country - joining George Camsell and Steve Bloomer.

Both these sides have had mixed success at this stage of the competition in the past with Sweden winning three of their past four quarter-finals and England claiming victory in just two of their previous eight appearances.

After ending their poor history in penalty shoot-outs, the Three Lions will be hoping to do the same with their quarter-final record but must first find a way past a stubborn Sweden side determined to ensure the World Cup won't be coming home.
