Lukaku equals Belgium scoring record with Mexico double

Romelu Lukaku has written himself into Belgian football history by becoming the national team’s joint-top scorer of all time.

The Manchester United forward joined Bernard Voorhoof and Paul Van Himst on 30 goals for the nation after registering twice against Mexico in a friendly on Friday. No-one has more.

Although the 24-year-old has come in for criticism due to a goal drought at club level, that has not been the case with Belgium, as he has scored seven times for the national team in his last five outings – and 13 times in his last 12 games.

Such form has seen him race to equal the mark of Voorhoof and Van Himst. The former turned out for Belgium between 1928-40 while the latter amassed his goals over a 14-year spell stretching from 1960-74.

It now seems inevitable that Lukaku will break the record, with Belgium set to tackle Japan at home on Tuesday, with the former Everton ace eyeing a milestone for Roberto Martinez’s side.
