So, it's going to be a repeat of the Euro 2012 final next week at Wembley, when Spain and Italy meet in the first semi-final under the arch. Both have earned their place there, fought hard for it, taking out Russia 2018 World Cup medalists en-route to get there - and both will know that the other presents different challenges to those they have faced so far. But who will join Luis Enrique and Roberto Mancini in the hat? There's still another two quarter-finals to go, with Denmark, the Czech Republic and Ukraine all vying for a final four spot - and England still dreaming of ending all those years of hurt to boot too. Unbeatable?

He came up on the losing side tonight but it's hard to look past Jeremy Doku as the best outfield player on the pitch tonight going forward - and given the quality on both his own team and that of winners Italy, that's saying something. The Rennes man&nbsp;completed eight dribbles against Italy, a record for a teenager since Opta records began&nbsp;for the European Championships, stretching back to 1980. Plenty of teenagers before him have peaked too earily - but here is to hoping that he'll be around at the top of the game for a long time to come.

Battle for the Golden Boot

Kevin De Bruyne, injured at the start of Euro 2020 after that nasty facial blow in the Champions League Final, has had to suffer back-to-back frustrations with Manchester City and Belgium this summer, but feels that the Red Devils did all they could to give themselves the chance to get back on level terms in the end. "I think we tried everything to win that match," he tells UEFA.&nbsp;"They scored a fantastic goal, but the first one may have been a mistake on our part. They had more possession and the ball didn't go in for us, which is a shame. Getting eliminated is always a disappointment."

De Bruyne: We tried everything

It's not all sunshine for Italy though, as news is breaking that they look to have been handed a massive blow in the shape of&nbsp;Leonardo Spinazzola's injury. The defender was stretchered off in the second half, having been one of the Azzurri's best players of the tournament, and reports&nbsp;are now claiming that he has done his Achilles tendon. Spinazzola set to miss rest of Euro 2020

Roberto Mancini has spoken following Italy's statement of intent against Belgium in Munich and the Azzurri boss firmly believes that his side were worthy winners in their quater-final clash. “We deserved the victory. The lads were extraordinary, and clearly we suffered in the last 10 minutes as we were really tired, but we could’ve scored more goals earlier,” the coach told RAI Sport. “I didn’t see 25 minutes of struggle at the start. There were chances at both ends, it was an open game. We only struggled in the last 10 minutes when Belgium started playing a long ball game.”

History beckons

Called upon to skipper the side in the absence of Granit Xhaka - a mising presence who Switzerland ultimately came close to overcoming -&nbsp;Xherdan Shaqiri had nothing but kind words to say for his squad following their battling shootout defeat. The Liverpool forward acknowledged that spot-kicks can leave the result of a game of the effective flip of a coin, and acknowledged that they possibly needed more of the rub of the green than they got. "I'm really proud of the team," he tells UEFA's website. "Penalties are a bit 50-50. I was nervous watching the shoot-out. I think we just lacked a little bit of luck today."

Further comments from Gerard Moreno who came on from the bench to try and win the game for La Roja, eventually snagging a penalty in that 3-1 shootout victory. He says that Spain will cut out their mistakes ahead of what has now been confirmed to be a clash with Italy, while added that he feels liberated by the manner of his side's result. "We'll resolve our various errors by working on the training ground," he told UEFA's website. "You make a mistake and the test is being mentally strong. Right now, I feel a 'liberation' that we've won. If not, I think the misses would have played on my mind."

As we come down from the high of two great games - one marked by the drama of extra-time and penalties, another elevated by the sheer craft on display - we're able to peruse the reaction from those involved tonight. First up is Spain boss Luis Enrique, who has professed his delight at reaching the semi-finals - while adding that no team who gets that far will settle for calling it a job well done. "We are so proud," he told UEFA's website. "It'd be ridiculous to think that we, or any of the semi-finalists, would sign for just getting that far now – all of us want to get to the final and win."

Agony and Ecstasy

On a genuine note though, this tournament could go six ways now and not many people would bat an eyelid. (Ukraine would be a curveball though, no doubt about it.) Italy have definitely put themselves among the favourites - aided by both a superb performance here and the fact that Spain will have played an extra half-hour and gone through the emotions of a penalty shootout too - and should head to Wembley among the most-fancied sides left in the hat. But La Roja will definitely not buckle easily, and while they have not possessed the flash of their opponents, England's&nbsp;diligence and home advantage should not be chalked off too should they make it back to north London from Rome in one piece. Ukraine won't go quietly too, and Denmark and the Czech Republic - unfancied outsiders, of which one is set for the final four - will have everything to play for too. What a final week or so we have in store!

...it's coming home?

There were a few very close misses for Romelu Lukaku in that match, the sort on which games are decided. Tonight, they went against the Inter man and the rest of his nation in crushing fashion. There is no shame to be had in their defeat, against an Italy side very much in imperious form - and one who defiantly answered questions about their defensive skills too in a thrilling test. But this one stings, and stings hard. They are the number one side in the world, have been for much of the intervening time since they came third in Russia. To end their run at the quarter-final stage is a bitter pill to swallow.

Red Devils left to reckon with defeat

But surely there is nothing to doubt about Italy now? Unbeaten since 2018, they have exorcised the ghosts of their failure to make Russia and the World Cup that year by some margin under Roberto Mancini - and now, they are just two games away from a first major honour since they hoisted the latter trophy in 2006. Defeating Belgium - high-flying, hot favourites Belgium - is about as big a sign of intent as you can get. Of the pre-tournament favourites, only England now remain in the mix alongside them, it could be argued, and on the basis of this performance, Azzurri supporters will be feeling pretty confident. Spain awaits them in what could prove to be another tricky test of character - but play like they did here and they will have no fear against La Roja.

Azzurri vault into pole position

Elation for Roberto Mancini and company. Heartbreak for Roberto Martinez and his side. It is Italy who march on to the final four of Euro 2020 - and it is Belgium, arguably the biggest pre-tournament favourite of the lot, who crash out in Germany. The Azzurri's remarkable unbeaten streak continues apace. The Red Devils' shortfall in major tournaments continues. This is likely the last time their golden generation will play together, unless they can all hold on for a shot at the Qatar 2022 World Cup next year. Their manager has lost very few games at major tournaments - but they've been the ones that will unfortunately haunt his legacy. Wales in 2016, France in 2018, now Italy in 2021.&nbsp;

Azzurri set up semi-final with Spain at Wembley

The whistle goes before the goal-kick can gain purchase! It's all over in Munich - Italy are into the semi-finals of Euro 2020! Belgium - the world's number one-ranked side - are out in the last-eight!

Chiellini stoops and puts the ball out for a set-piece. Everyone is up for Belgium - but the first looping touch takes it over the crossbar for the Red Devils.&nbsp; Gianluigi Donnarumma punches the air. Surely that is that?

Corner to Belgium

This has become a terribly stop-start affair over its final few minutes, as Italy's players drop to the ground with almost every extra challenge under the sun. It eats up the clock - but will there be extra seconds to come on top of what has been indicated because of it?

Further stoppages muddy final seconds

Rafael Toloi is on for the Azzurri, and five added minutes are flagged on the side. De Bruyne's free-kick is then lofted in - successfully this time - and referee&nbsp;Slavko Vincic blows almost immediately for a foul against Belgium. Gianluigi Donnarumma raced off his line and looked to get elbowed by his own player in the scramble for the ball. That is a tough call against the Red Devils.

Five added minutes incoming

Berardi just puts a trip on De Bruyne after a sustained period of Belgian attack and the Manchester City man has nabbed the free-kick 30 yards or so out on the left edge. This really is now-or-never time for the Red Devils - and it's apparently never after Berardi jumps out to block it, from comfortably less than 10 yards. It will be retaken.

Doku cuts a blazing path around three defenders on the edge of the Italy box before sticking a shot over the crossbar from the lip of the area. Belgium won't be able to waste many more chances like that. Perhaps the biggest frustration will be that they have failed to score from open play tonight, even with Kevin De Bruyne there to pull the strings. Time is ticking down on their Euro 2020 campaign - and with it, the dream of sending their golden generation out with the silverware to match their talent.

Heartbreak for Spinazzola 

Emerson is on for Spinazzola as the latter is removed from the field, in what is a sad end to his game. The Azzurri have also brought on&nbsp;Domenico Berardi for the final push. Italy just need to see out the next quarter-hour - because injury time will undoubtedly bring extra minutes - without conceding and they will have booked themselves a semi-final with Spain at Wembley next week.

Italy make double swap

Leonardo Spinazzola pulls up in pursuit of Hazard now and he's going to need treatment now too from the medics. Having stood initially, he is laid down by his team-mates on the pitch and looks to becoming increasingly distraught. Medics have headed to him with a stretcher and it looks like his night is over.

Belgium's chase just got even tougher now, as&nbsp;Nacer Chadli - after almost an immediate impact - is forced off with injury now. It's a leg issue of some kind, possibly a muscle problem. Dennis Praet takes his spot while Italy also make some changes, with&nbsp;Bryan Cristante and&nbsp;Andrea Belotti both on for the Azzurri. There's a quarter-hour left to play.

Goals galore...?

Insigne scored one screamer from the left edge in the first half and tries from the same spot again. This is a lower effort, dipped towards the post rather than lofted, and&nbsp;Courtois palms it away. Nacer Chadli and&nbsp;Dries Mertens are both on for Belgium and the former makes an instant impact, sending them sailing forward. A gorgeous square ball is slipped past the Italian six-yard area - and neither Lukaku or Hazard can somehow nudge it into the back of the net. Fine margins, absolutely fine margins, in this one.

Golden chances at both ends

Leonardo Spinazzola is a left-back, but in name only it seems. He's the furthest Italy man forward right now and just flashes the ball wide of the mark at the left post as it comes back to earth near him. Italy win a free-kick off a hefty&nbsp;Thomas Vermaelen chalenge. The latter gets a stern word from the referee and Belgium ultimately defend the set-piece with a great run from De Bruyne back to the centre-circle. This is full-throttle stuff.

Both sides at full-tilt

This is truly end-to-end stuff and now Italy mount a sustained attack on Belgium's defensive lines, with&nbsp;Ciro Immobile,&nbsp;Ciro Immobile and&nbsp;Federico Chiesa all involved in a collection of dangerous deliveries. The latter forces&nbsp;Thibaut Courtois to palm a pass away from his six-yard area, in a perilous moment that sees the ball fly close to another Italian attacker.

How has Romelu Lukaku not buried that in the back of the net?! Jeremy Doku makes the run, and plays De Bruyne in on the left edge of the box. The square delivery flashes across to the striker and - somehow - he fails to tuck it away. Leonardo Spinazzola looks to have just about got enough on it to prevent a clean connection.

It's getting a little bit tasty out there in these challenges, as Jorginho attempts to extract a penalty for Italy now and Doku is then felled on the halfway line. Neither offence earns a free-kick, and there's a clutch of catcalls and whistles echoing arounds Allianz Arena as play continues. How feisty will this one become?&nbsp;

Kevin De Bruyne tears down the right flank, into Italy's box, and&nbsp;Jorginho does a fantastic great job to outfox him and prevent a shot from coming in. The two players have been among the best for their sides in this brilliant buffet of football action. Here's hoping they keep it up for the rest of the night.

Here we go then. It may well be the final second half of Euro 2020 for one of these two sides, unless we're headed for another extra-time bonanza. Who will emerge the winner here? Italy, powered by fantastic finishes and a goal to the good? Or Belgium, the top side in world football chasing a match after their frontman netted a penalty to put them back in the mix? Doku darts to the spot

Romelu Lukaku has scored 24 goals in his last 23 appearances for Belgium, including 22 in his last 19 competitive internationals. The man is an absolute machine. That penalty will have done wonders for the Red Devils going into the sheds. Arguably, it changes the dynamics of both teamtalks too - and perhaps pushes momentum towards Roberto Martinez and company too.

Pure wizardry

Tournament football, eh? Keep your Premier Leagues and your Bundesligas and everything else. Just inject this into our veins. But then, it wouldn't be anywhere near as wonderfully special if we had it every week, would it? And this, make no mistake, has all the makings of something wonderfully special. Two superb goals from Nicolo&nbsp;Barella and&nbsp;Lorenzo Insigne have put Italy in the driving seat - but Romelu Lukaku's penalty on the stroke of the half-time whistle has left them hanging on to their lead by the smalles of margins. Whatever you do, don't adjust your set.

Belgium are right back in this on the stroke of half-time! Romelu Lukaku makes it four for Euro 2020 as he plants that one like a traction engine as&nbsp;Gianluigi Donnarumma goes for the left post. It will be the last act before the break, surely - and it has handed an almighty lifeline to the Red Devils. Italy are still smarting at that call.

Jeremy Doku is through on the left side of the box, as Belgium look to force something with the break beckoning - and that is an elbow in the back from&nbsp;Giovanni Di Lorenzo! Referee&nbsp;Slavko Vincic wastes absolutely no time and points straight to the spot. Italy's players crowd him, hollering and shouting, but he is unmoved - and VAR backs up his call too. Romelu Luikaku, naturally, steps up to take this one. What a huge moment in the game this could be.

Penalty to Belgium!

MY WORD, WHAT SORCERY IS THIS? Lorenzo Insigne must have gone to Hogwarts, or studied under Gandalf, or been a magical girl in another life, because that is absolutely spellbinding! The striker cuts around in midfield, comes down the left edge, and then turns to loop an absolutely blinding finish into the far-top corner, in at the right post. Absolutely glorious! Italy are in dreamland!

There had been something of a sustained knock on Belgian defensive lines ahead of that goal and now the Red Devils look to spin it around with traction down the wings. That one will absolutely count!&nbsp;Nicolo&nbsp;Barella&nbsp;has done it! It felt like something special might be needed to break the deadlock here and it has been done so with some superb footwork. The winger steps around three defenders after a botched clearance is poked to him, before he turns on a dime and sprays a rocket of a finish past&nbsp;Courtois, in at the left post on the opposite side of the box. Sing your heart out

There's not many better sights than the Red Devils when they are going up through the gears - and it is a gorgeous ball from De Bruyne to send Romelu Lukaku away on a fabulous break. Donnarumma palms away his low curling finish and then Italy show some skill of their own, tearing downfield with fluid play through&nbsp;Leonardo Spinazzola. A deflected shot falls to&nbsp;Thibaut Courtois but Belgium promptly give it up and let the Azzurri have at them again. Lorenzo Insigne curls an effort from distance over the top-right corner, not able to get the drop on it. This is a proper end-to-end affair.

What a hit from Kevin De Bruyne - and what a stop from&nbsp;Gianluigi Donnarumma! The goalkeeper has possibly seen more action in the first quarter of this game than he has throughout the rest of Euro 2020 so far. There's no suggestion that the Belgium man is still carrying that injury however. Roberto Martinez may have played his cards very close to his chest on the Manchester City star's fitness. His shot, following a barnstorming run, is arcing towards the top-left corner where it is palmed away to safety.

De Bruyne goes close!

Marco Verratti will have to watch himself now after dragging down Youri Tielemans and he picks up a yellow card for his troubles. The favour is returned by the Belgium man a moment later and the former makes an absolute pantomime of it, earning a booking for his opponent. Neither will be banned for a prospective semi-final with Spain with those, to keep track of who is walking the tightrope.

You couldn't ask for more of an even keel so far, really - both sides are holding at 50 per cent possession, and similar figures in one-on-one duels too. Belgium have had three corners so far, and they do seem to spark a little panic for Italy, but they have been robust enough to see off the danger so far when presented. Young Jeremy Doku is looking right at home out wide for the Red Devils. He could be in for a big game.

A succession of fine balls from Kevin De Bruyne and a darting run from Jeremy Doku has already afforded Belgium more space than Italy will want - it has been said that the latter haven't faced an attacking threat quite like today's opponents so far at Euro 2020. Things to come?

The whistle goes and after both sides take the knee - Belgium's Romelu Lukaku with his fist raised in the air - we are underway in Munich. Though they are not playing there, Italy are one of only two nations still at Euro 2020 who have home stadia in the mix, England being the other. Unlike the Three Lions, they won't be heading home if they win here - they'll be off to London. But can they trump the world number ones?

Both sides take to the field and the national anthems - insert the phrase absolutely slaps here as needed - are belted out with gusto. The sight of Kevin De Bruyne in that starting XI is a huge boost for the Red Devils and their supporters. Is he fully fit though? Only time will tell. Well, that was a nerve-wracking encounter in the end, wasn't it? That winning feeling

The odds were against Switzerland when they lost Granit Xhaka to suspension. The odds were against them when they conceded an own goal so early on. The odds were against them when Breel Embolo was forced off injured. The odds were against them when&nbsp;Remo Freuler was shown a straight red card just after they had scored. Vladimir&nbsp;Petkovic is with his men, speaking to them. They all look absolutely heartbroken, but despite the vision of his own crestfallen face, he is unwavering in his apparent praise. Luis Enrique is punching the air, batting away invisible enemies left, right and centre. The small group of Spanish fans nestled behind his technical area are on cloud nine, and so is he. It has been a difficult few years for the manager, and a difficult tournament. Now, they are Euro 2020 semi-finalists.

Spain beat Switzerland in a shootout defined by big saves and bigger misses, as La Roja get the better of the 10-men&nbsp;Rossocrociati in Saint Petersburg. The latter's hearts are broken. They came, with one less body on the pitch for the final three-quarters of an hour of this extended game, so close to sealing a first-ever semi-final berth at a major tournament in their history. All that after the result against France too, one they can take with them forever. Ruben Vargas is consoled by his teammates and Spain's Thiago. Of the three misses from his side, his is the one that will likely haunt the most. Yann Sommer did everything he could to keep his nation in this one - but in the end, it wasn't enough.

Strap yourselves in folks - we're going to penalties! For the second time in as many knockout games, Switzerland will step onto the spot-kick roulette wheel. Having avoided a similar fate in extra-time against Croatia, Spain cannot dodge it this time as Rodri spears a header over the crossbar. Don't you dare go anywhere.

Kylian Mbappe felt the weight of the world on his shoulders when Yann Sommer saved his penalty in the last-16, and Luis Enrique obviously does not want that weight on the teenage Pedri. That means that he will miss the semi-finals if Spain get there.

Liverpool's Thiago is on for Spain in their latest change now, as Luis Enrique makes his latest throw of the dice. Amid all the stories of Euro 2020, La Roja's revival - blighted by a squad-wide Covid-19 scare just days before the tournament and slow to start in the group stages - to the impressive machine of the past two matches is one that deserves applause. But they have slipped back into frustrating patterns in front of goal here, and it was a defensive howler down the other end that put them in this position in the first place. They throw a crazy passage of balls into the Swiss box now and come up with a corner, which then goes straight to Sommer.

Desperation takes hold

What a block from&nbsp;Rodriguez! Out of position, he somehow slides across to block Llorente's strike from the centre of the box after Spain unlock the Swiss defence again. A glancing touch of the arm of the latter means that it is a free-kick against La Roja. Precious seconds are eaten up on the clock. Dani Olmo flirts with a shot a moment later and it is straight into Yann Sommer's hands.

Penalties looming

How is your heart rate, Switzerland fans? There has been absolutely nothing to suggest that the Rossocrociati can find a goal. All signs point to them playing for penalties, as they pack their defence as tight as they can. The onus is on Spain to find that winning goal, it seems. Their opponents are happy to send this to spot-kicks. This game has transformed into an emotionally-charged war of attrition.

Against a huge wave of pressure, Switzerland - a man light and run ragged at the back - have resisted Spain across the first half of extra-time, thanks in no small part to a brilliant succession of saves from Yann Sommer. Regardless of what happens now, the goalkeeper should be near the top of any self-respecting individual's man of the match ballots. He has turned in a superb game at the back for his side. They are not out of the woods yet though. Not by a long shot.

Fabian Schar is on for Switzerland, but how much good it will do for his side's attacking hopes is particularly subjective. The screw is being turned and a booming long ball catches kindly for Moreno - who puts his effort straight at Sommer. Then&nbsp;Mikel Oyarzabal - not long on himself - bashes an effort towards goal which the keeper parries away. Moreno is promptly penalised after he runs into the keeper too, winding him painfully. Kevin Mbabu is also on and that will be the last change Switzerland can make.

Switzerland stand steady - but for how long?

This has been one-way traffic since the restart and Switzerland are absolutely gasping for air - but Spain cannot find the mark. Much as they struggled to do in their first two games, La Roja have been rendered oddly impotent. Pau Torres plays off a lovely ball straight to Sommer, and then a succession of fast passes sees&nbsp;Marcos Llorente have a shot blocked. Moreno heads the subsequent corner wide.

Already, Yann Sommer is under the cosh and facing a slew of attempts from Spain. He reaches high to palm a rocket from&nbsp;Jordi Alba over his crossbar and then is quick to snaffle a soft header put to ground from the subsequent set-piece. He would have had&nbsp;Dani Olmo's strike covered too, had it not taken a deflection - but mercifully this time, it spears wide of the left post rather than into the net.

Sommer faces exhaustive workout

How on earth has&nbsp;Gerard Moreno just put that wide? The substitute scuffs an almighty chance wide of the left post after Jordi Alba teases him in, Switzerland's stretched defence cracked like poorly-made pottery. If this goes the distance, that will be a moment that haunts Spain across the rest of this tournament.
