And with that, Euro 2020 has finally come to a close. A month-long festival of football, a year delayed, has played out across the continent and beyond - and left some eternal memories in its wake. At the end of it all, it is Italy who make amends for their Russia 2018 absence to announce themselves on the world stage once more - and it is England for whom 55 years of hurt will continue to keep them dreaming. Old heads, old shoulders

It may have ended in the harshest way possible, but Bukayo Saka played a blinder of a tournament at Euro 2020 - and Gareth Southgate has nothing but praise for the teenager in his further post-match comments. "He is such a super boy, he’s so popular with the whole group," he says. "He’s had an incredible tournament and he’s a star, and he will continue to be a star. In a final tonight as well, he performed exceptionally well when he came into the game. "We’ve got to be there to sport and help him, but I’m sure he’ll get a lot of love from outside from the way he’s established himself in this tournament."

Double delights for Jorginho

If Gareth Southgate's England have studiously avoided trash-talking, the same cannot strictly be said for Leonardo Bonucci, whose fiery&nbsp;braggadocio remains part of his lasting appeal for many. He's told RAI Sport that they taught the Three Lions "a lesson" tonight. “Seeing 58,000 people leave before the trophy was handed out is something to relish, and&nbsp;now the cup is coming to Rome," he tells RAI Sport. "They thought it was staying in London! Sorry for them, but Italy once again taught a lesson. “When we got together in Sardinia, there was something different compared to the past. We slowly gained confidence, certainty, unity. This was the icing on the cake that makes us legends.”

Bonucci brags about Italian 'lesson' for England

When Bukayo Saka stepped up - ahead of Raheem Sterling and Jack Grealish - to take the final, decisive spot-kick, it felt like tempting fate placing all the pressure upon the teenager. But his manager has stepped to his defence, stating to BBC Sport that the spot-kicks rest with him. "I chose the penalty takers based on what we’ve done in training and nobody is on their own," he says. "We’ve won together as a team and it’s absolutely on all of us in terms of not being able to win the game tonight. "But in terms of the penalties, that’s my call and totally rests with me. We were well prepared and started well, but unfortunately, the guys weren’t able to convert tonight. They can’t look at themselves in terms of how they practised because they couldn’t do that anymore or any better."

Southgate: Penalty call on me

Gareth Southgate has sounded off with BBC Sport now, and the England manager says that while it is tough to take in the dressing room, his side cannot blame themselves for their efforts. "We’re hugely disappointed because firstly, the players have been an absolute credit," he says.&nbsp;"They’ve given everything they possibly could tonight, they’ve run themselves into the ground. At times, they played really well and at times, we didn’t keep the ball quite well enough, especially at the beginning of the second half. "But they can’t have any recriminations. They’ve been a joy to work with and they’ve gone further than we have for so long, but tonight, it is incredibly painful in that dressing room."

Italy captain Giorgio Chiellini has spoken of his side's dominance shortly after their early concession, much as his manager has, but he has again paid tribute to a "tough" match on a magical night. “It was a tough game, we started in the worst way possible, with England scoring after two minutes," he tells ITV. "The fans, all of the stadium, gave their energy to England, but we were quiet and calm and then we started to lead the match from 15 minutes and started to play. "We found the right passes, controlled the game and that was the way to win. It’s a dream come true, it’s magic. We are more than happy.”

Roberto Mancini has been torn away from his celebrating players to speak to Sky Sport Italia and he has admitted that he has nothing to say that can describe his players effort, while passing on his commiserations for England. “It was impossible to even think about it, but the lads were extraordinary," he said. "I have no words for them, this is a wonderful group. "It wasn’t an easy game and this one developed to become very difficult, but then we dominated it. On penalties you need to have a bit of luck and I’m also a bit sorry for the English."

Gareth Southgate's culture within the international setup remains an integral part of how England play - and it has taken them to three top-four finishes in three tournaments and a silver medal here today. Did he get it right with the 3-4-3 twist today? Initially, yes - Luke Shaw and Kieran Trippier both enjoyed fantastic first halves for the Three Lions, even as Italy found ways to swing momentum and ball back their way. But in the second half, it was unable to work against Roberto Mancini's swaps - and while that equaliser was a scruffy set-piece finish, momentum was clearly with the Azzurri by then. The shift back to a 4-2-3-1 with Saka never quite paid off either, but it feels spectacularly churlish to knock the manager's efforts after taking it to a shootout when Italy couldn't break England down for a regular winner either.

They'll be back

A couple of penalty calls, a few split decisions where yellow cards could have easily been reds - Harry Kane may have a point when he says England, ultimately nulified but never totally in freefall, just had one of those games. "We didn’t create too many chances, they got the breakthrough from a set piece and after that, it was probably 50/50," he tells BBC Sport.&nbsp;"We had a few half chances in extra time and then penalties are penalties. We went through our process and the boys did everything they could, but it just wasn’t our night. "Anyone can miss a penalty. We win together, we lose together and we’ll grow from it. It will give us more motivation to do well in the World Cup next year."

Kane: It just wasn't our night

Speaking to BBC Sport, Harry Kane has arrived as England captain to break down his side's defeat in heartbreaking fashion - and the Tottenham man, still without a major medal to his name, remains hopeful for the future. "The boys couldn’t have given more," he says. "Penalties are the worst thing in the world when you lose them. It’s been a fantastic tournament, we should be proud and hold our heads up high, but it’s going to hurt now. It’s going to hurt for a while, but we’re on the right track and we’re building. Hopefully we can progress next year. "We played against a very good side and got off to the perfect start. We maybe dropped a little bit too deep, sometimes when you score that early, it’s easy to soak up the pressure and hold onto that. They had a lot of the ball, but we looked fairly in control."

England are absolutely right, you know. They have assembled a remarkable bunch of players. They have conceded two goals throughout the entire tournament. They have come together with a warmth, compassion and spirit sorely lacking in other facets of modern life. The sad realisation that there will be a vocal section of social media railing against several of their players tonight is a bitterly sobering one. If this tournament has taught us anything, it is that we are stronger when we are together. That is exactly what the sporting nation should do now - come together and support their team, even in defeat. Abuse has no place in this game.

England hail journey

Harry Kane has played up front, the lone forward ahead of three men for most of this tournament, but today's shift in formation called for a deeper-lying role. By and large, England's skipper rose to the challenge in the first half, causing plenty of problems for Italy before Roberto Mancini's changes wrestled back smarter control. It means he fails to add to his tally and misses out on the Golden Boot - but given England were kept to only six shots in the end, it is perhaps unsurprising that he did not bolster his numbers in the end. A drawback, perhaps, of the way the game was played.

Led by a beaming&nbsp;Leonardo Spinazzola on crutches, now it is time for Italy to collect their medals - and each one shouts something into the television cameras as they pass in celebration. Italy feted

Italy, who have formed the typical guard of honour, remain bouncing - but they respectfully pause for England to pass by, forming a guard of honour around the Three Lions. Gareth Southgate leads them up to collect their silver medals. It is England's best-ever performance at the European Championship. Even in defeat, they have managed something superb this summer - they have restored pride to the nation on the sporting field in a time when it has been badly needed.

It's not too much of a surprise after his performance tonight - but&nbsp;Gianluigi Donnarumma has been awarded the Player of the Tournament honour for his performances between the sticks. The free agent looks set to join PSG in the next few weeks. What a signing they have on their hands.

Roberto Mancini. Roberto Mancini! A decade ago, he won at Wembley with Manchester City, beating out Stoke City in the FA Cup Final. Now, he has comes up with the goods on the biggest stage again. Italy, by and large, have been the best team at this tournament. They've trailed for effectively an hour across it all, today, and they've still found a way to deliver the goods. His changes did a superb job on countering that 3-4-3 formation England made such a bright start with. They restricted their hosts to just 34 per cent of the ball in the end. It proved to be enough.

Mancini completes masterful revival

Whether Gareth Southgate got those calls wrong at the end is another matter for another day - and you would have perhaps backed his players, all attacking options, to do the job in the end. Jordan Pickford tried his best - indeed, distribution aside, the goalkeeper had a blinder of a match for the Three Lions - but for now, Euro 1996 and the heartbreak that has haunted the manager throughout his career has reared its head once more. Southgate won't care about history. He'll care about how his players feel in the here and now, and how they will bounce back from the pain of this night. He takes them to applaud their fans; the England faithful clap their hands back.

Imperious Italy do it again

But for every victory, there must be defeat - and a tribute to England is needed too for their part in this contest. The Three Lions delivered a superb start to get their home fans cheering - but the magnitude of the occasion perhaps just froze them at the end. It is a hugely cruel blow to three of England's most exciting talents in Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho and Bukayo Saka, the first two in particular thrust on with no game time to take spot-kicks. It is perhaps the only gamble of their manager that has backfired - but they would have been chomping at the bit to get on themselves. Gareth Southgate is straight there to console them both. His side have fallen short at the final hurdle, in the hardest fashion possible - but they have made clear and obvious progress from Russia 2018. They look like a side who may have more to give.

What a performance from the Azzurri in the end. Shocked by Luke Shaw's opener, they reset their approach, twisted their tricks and battled back to be on top in a highly-charged Wembley atmosphere. Roberto Mancini's managerial reputation is already a fine one - but he has only enhanced it now, with a clutch of youth and experience. The superb reflexes of&nbsp;Gianluigi Donnarumma, still only a spring chicken in the grand scheme of things, came to their rescue again. A tribute too to the wily old fox combo of&nbsp;Giorgio Chiellini and&nbsp;Leonardo Bonucci. These two may not be around for Qatar 2022 next year - but if this is to be their final bow, then they depart with the silverware they richly deserve. They look absolutely elated.

The sporting drama doesn't get much bigger than this, does it? Now, truly, is the time for heroes. The shootout will take place at the end where England have their fans nestled behind the goal rather than Italy - but it will be the Azzurri who shoot first.

Steel yourselves - for the first time at Euro 2020, England are headed to a penalty shootout, to decide where the European Championship will go. Italy have already survived one shootout, beating Spain to get here in the semi-finals.&nbsp;Gianluigi Donnarumma has a knack for being one of the best in the business. Jordan Pickford has won his last two shootouts for England, against&nbsp;Colombia and Switzerland. The fate of this game rest on their shoulders. The spectre of 1996 looms large for the hosts still, after all these years.

ETFT: Italy 1-1 England

Marcus Rashford and Jadon Sancho are on for Jordan Henderson and Kyle Walker - and at an Italy corner no less.&nbsp; Somehow, the Three Lions defend it without their extra defensive bodies - and then three added minutes are flagged by the fourth official. Rashford appears to be playing right-back. If England fans were not nervous before, they surely are now.

England make final swaps

Alessandro Florenzi is on for Italy, replacing Emerson, but England will have to wait a moment to make their last swaps. They are surely all changes with penalties in mind - because this is almost certainly going to spot-kicks now. The heartbreak of Euro 1996 is looming very large on the horizon right now for the Three Lions. Gareth Southgate will be studiously hoping that history is not about to repeat itself on the Wembley turf.

Final changes incoming

Jorginho is a lucky fellow here to escape with a yellow card. A loose ball in midfield is there and Grealish lunges for it. The Italy man follows him in and drags his studs across the England player's knee. It's a hard booking. You've seen those given as immediate red cards before. England's subsequent free-kick is soft and&nbsp;Donnarumma collects easily enough.

Suddenly, out of nowhere, England appear to have found a second wind, one sparked by a superb one-two to set Sterling into the box. The winger is robbed superbly by&nbsp;Chiellini but the Three Lions have a bit of go-forward. Grealish attacks the line once more and sets up a fine ball for Shaw, who tries to lay it back to Saka - but he can't quite haul it back into contention and Italy break away once more.

England ramp up the pressure

Federico Bernardeschi is the man who steps up to take it - and he puts it straight to Jordan Pickford. The goalkeeper stops it, bobbles it and grabs it back before Jorginho arrives. England have a chance down the opposite end, a long throw from Kyle Walker causing some havoc, and Harry Kane's dipping cross needs an intervention from&nbsp;Gianluigi Donnarumma, before Italy are flagged for offside heading down the other end.

Surely both managers have an eye on what comes after this? Gareth Southgate looks like he may do - Marcus Rashford is stripped on the sidelines and preparing to enter at the next junction. Maguire immediately concedes a foul, finely worked by&nbsp;Belotti, and picks up a booking. Italy will have this free-kick under 25 yards out.

Back underway

A foul against the Three Lions inside the box means that the set-piece troubles no-one at that will be half-time. England have shown a little more gumption in this first additional period, but there's no getting away from the fact that it feels a little more like Italy's game to lose. The clutch of Azzurri fans here today look to be having far more of a party than their counterparts. What do Gareth Southgate and Roberto Mancini have up their sleeves?

ETHT: Italy 1-1 England

There's just going to be a lone extra minute before the teams switch ends - and Maguire is called upon to deal with a dangerous low cross. England win a free-kick after Grealish is barged over - and then, moments later, they win a free-kick 25 yards or so out from Italy's box for a handball against&nbsp;Locatelli. There will be a final set-piece chance of this first half of extra-time.

One added minute incoming

Grealish has a near-instant impact and brings three defenders down to bear on him before leaving the ball for Saka. A glancing touch from&nbsp;Di Lorenzo is enough to break the stride of the latter England man however and his touch takes it out for a goal-kick. There's a handful of minutes before the half-time break and England remain a side flagging, seeking that great bit of inspiration. Luke Shaw's wonderful opener seems a world away. A golden chance for Italy after Walker is turned around but Pickford just beats off&nbsp;Bernardeschi with a microsecond to spare.

Time slipping away

A typically energetic turn from Mason Mount, without as much ball as he would hope, comes to an end - and here comes the man a lot of Wembley Stadium have been waiting for. Jack Grealish rumbles onto the field, the most fouled man in the Premier League. Can he get a run at the Azzurri's defence or is it too late?

A stroke of fortune for England - a deflected ball flicked into midfield is slipped superbly through a gab to Sterling and the winger bears down into the box, earning a corner. Italy make another change now, bringing on the pace of&nbsp;Manuel Locatelli for&nbsp;Marco Verratti, who looks to be carrying a knock. The set-piece is whistled in, headed as far as Phillips and the Leeds United man sprays a low shot wide of the mark.

Bernardeschi and Emerson combine to sandwich Henderson, and the referee hands a free-kick to the Three Lions. Gareth Southgate has perhaps not got those changes quite right so far - but the faith has to be kept now, surely. He's brought them this far. Have England been too clean in this game? Their visitors to Wembley have four bookings and they have none. Yet playing with a bit more tactical bite has worked wonders in the second half for Italy.

Here we go then! No changes from Gareth Southgate, one from Roberto Mancini -&nbsp;Lorenzo Insigne is off and&nbsp;Andrea Belotti is on for the Azzurri. The roar around Wembley starts up again, but it is going to take something special to have it raise the roof again.

ETKO: Italy 1-1 England

Would you call this an all-time classic? England's sparky start had them ruling the roost at Wembley, and Italy have spun it around to finish stronger by some margin. The energy and the commitment in midfield from the Three Lions has been snuffed out to a part with Robeto Mancini's changes. A hush has settled around Wembley - and the hosts need to dig deep, be brave and awaken the sleeping beast they have within.

The final delivery from England is headed away and referee Bjorn&nbsp;Kuipers blows the whistle to signal the end of injury time. Then Chiellini brings down Saka with a rugged pull on the shirt of the winger, practically throttling him. He gets a yellow - but given the sheer nature of the foul, how it isn't more is remarkable.

Chiesa delivers dynamo performance

Brace yourselves folks - we have six minutes incoming at Wembley to split these two sides apart. Otherwise, we're gettin an extra half-hour - and England won't want to be reminded of how it went in Croatia for them when they had to go through the motions of those additional minutes. It's there for the taking and both sides know it.

To further complicate matters for England, a pitch invader now covers the pitch, forcing the referee to bring the game to a halt while the incident is dealt with. That's not helping either side here, though Italy look more amused by it than their hosts. It robs a little bit of air from the match, a little bit of composure from the Three Lions. Away we go again, with a blazing run by Sterling - and four defenders do enough to muscle him out before he can cut back in the box.

Chiesa has hobbled back on, if a little gingerly - and England respond by putting their best attack of the second half together, with a lovely run down the left flank. The cut-back to Saka is bobbled by the substitute and runs away from him. A free-kick for a foul on Kalvin Phillips allows Stones to crack it&nbsp;in, and Shaw blazes a volley over. That's practically in orbit. Chiesa now will go and&nbsp;Bernardeschi replaces him. Time is running out for a winner in regular time here.

Chiesa gets brought down on the edge of the England box and though no call will go his way from the referee, he remains down on the ground, rolling around in pain. It looks like he has a foot knock - and his game may well be over.&nbsp;Federico Bernardeschi is stripped on the sidelines, though he has not arrived. Every second spent deciding kills England's momentum.

Chiesa injury brings stoppage

There's a real sense of deja vu to this performance from the hosts in the second half. Gareth Southgate has spoken about the fact that his side have learned from the mistakes of Croatia - but right now, they don't feel like they have. Jordan Henderson has slightly settled the balance in the midfield, and Maguire wins back-to-back free-kicks. Italy are getting a bit robust in their challenges now.

Moments after&nbsp;Berardi flicks a long ball over Pickford's bar after a glorious one-on-one chance, Jordan Henderson arrives to replace Rice for England. All the momentum, all the wind is with Italy now. The Three Lions have been truly undone by that goal. Their roar has been muzzled and they know it. The Azzurri are managing this game superbly.

Gareth Southgate knows now is the time to make his first change of the game - and it is Bukayo Saka who is on, to replace the man who took his spot in the starting lineup. Trippier has had a fine game for the Three Lions, serving up that superb assist for Luke Shaw's opener, but England need something to wrestle this game back into their control now.

Well, you can't say that it has not been brewing. Italy have definitely shown more energy in this second half, forced to chase this game - and they have done so superbly. Roberto Mancini got those changes exactly right. It was an ugly goal, but the visitors will not care in the slightest. It's like a balloon has been popped at Wembley - but the roar is soon back up to speed. This game still has twists and turns to come.

It's old heads who have ridden to the rescue of Italy in their hour of need! Harry Maguire defends a superb cross out for a corner but the Azzurri catch England out with a low, dipping effort. It pinballs around the box, and Jordan Pickford manages to get low to steer it away from his left post - only for him to push it onto the woodwork. It rebounds and&nbsp;Leonardo Bonucci is there to smash it in at close-range, on his 109th appearance for his club. England are broken at the back - and Italy have their response. It's all square heading into the final quarter!

A fine chance for&nbsp;Federico Chiesa - and England's defenders will wish that they did more to deny him there. The forward dinks into the box, and runs back across the face of four defenders before slipping a shot through their ranks. Pickford sails towards his right post with a low, smart save, but the goalkeeper is typically furious about the fact he had to make a save. He looks more pleased when England go down the other end, win a corner off a sloppy&nbsp;Di Lorenzo and then see Stones head just over the crossbar.

Chiesa thinks he should have a penalty shout after he goes to ground softly in the England box, but the referee instead gives a hand ball against him. A word for Declan Rice, who has cut some superb paths through the middle tonight. He's looking absolutely rock-solid going forward.

Roberto Mancini has seen enough now from his side, and he makes the first changes of the game.&nbsp;Bryan Cristante and&nbsp;Domenico Berardi are both on - Barella, with that booking, and Ciro Immobile, arguably the softest of the Azzurri attack today, are both off. A foul from&nbsp;Leonardo Bonucci mere moments later on Sterling allows a free-kick to be swung into Italy's penalty and Harry Maguire heads it over. The counter comes - and Pickford is forced into a smart save at his left post after Berardi makes an instant impact, combining with&nbsp;Chiesa to cause a bit of chaos that Declan Rice eventually lashes away.

To be or not to be?

Oh, this is absolutely not where England want to concede a free-kick, right on the edge of the lip of their own penalty area. Sterling, still annoyed at the call down the other end, is the guilty party with a barge on&nbsp;Lorenzo Insigne. The Three Lions get let off though - a bait-and-switch attempt to fool Pickford sees it swung comfortably around the edge of the goal to the left by&nbsp;Insigne.

Harry Kane has pestered Italy with his runs all night - and now, the Azzurri's latest nibble has tipped the referee over the edge. Nicolo Barella is shown the first booking of the game for his attempts to pull the England skipper back. A moment later, Raheem Sterling is down in the visitors' box, claiming a foul for an effort in the back of the knee. Nobody is having it, despite England's frustrations, and play rolls on.

Trippier engineers Three Lions attack

There is a long, long way to go in this game, and Gareth Southgate will know that Italy have their fair share of matchwinners all skulking around the field, seeking to pick off the chances they will be afforded at some point. But his switch to the 3-4-3 has paid dividends so far, hasn't it? Kieran Trippier's general lack of minutes has kept him fresh throughout Euro 2020 - and he has looked like one of the most lively figures out there. Luke Shaw, goal aside, has proven a thorn in the side of the Italian defence too, and their attack for that matter. All of England are playing some fine football right now, in fact. Can they keep it up to the full-time whistle? That is the question.

England seize chance to shine

In Italy's record 33-game unbeaten run coming into tonight's final, they had trailed for only 44 minutes in total. The Azzurri were behind for 43 of the opening 45 minutes against England this evening. Psychologically, the advantage is with the hosts right now - and given how little the Azzurri have had to fight back to win games under Roberto Mancini, this genuinely is a test for them. One question floating around the manager's head; is Jorginho fit to continue? The Chelsea man remained a bright light after his running repairs, and this truly is the all-or-nothing game - but if he slows throughout, he could become a liability in the middle.

Bjorn&nbsp;Kuipers blows his whistle and that will be the half-time break at Wembley. England - perhaps against expectation - are just three-quarters of an hour away from a maiden European Championship. Luke Shaw's superb strike inside two minutes has put them on the road to glory, and a sharply composed performance both on and off the ball for the most part has seen them hold Italy at bay, if perhaps slightly less convincingly as the half wore on. What a game this is turning out to be. The Three Lions have roared - but the Azzurri are far from done yet.

Leonardo Bonucci is one of the Italian greats, but that is not one for the highlight reel. Frustrated by England's man-marking, he tries from distance and puts it into a different London postcode. His partner,&nbsp;Giorgio Chiellini, has found himself far more occupied by Harry Kane's lunging runs so far. Both defenders could be in for a tough second half dealing with counter-attacks.

That injury to Jorginho earlier means we will have four extra minutes in this half. A fine stop by Stones now! Italy volley an effort from the edge of the box, the delivery catching all but the England defender out. A follow-up falls straight to Pickford. Italy are pushing hard for the equaliser before the whistle goes. They're starting to get on top of the Three Lions, in that three-man defence with the wing-backs.

Harry Maguire appears to rise above the crowded box and heads away, but Italy keep chipping away - at least, until a final ball is shuffled too long and out for a goal-kick. England have back-to-back shouts for free-kicks firmly turned down by referee Bjorn&nbsp;Kuipers - the first after Sterling is blocked trying to run into the box and the second after Rice is hacked down. The home crowd are not impressed by both non-calls.

Pickford's distribution came in for a bit of stick against Denmark, particularly after that Denmark goal rattled his cage, and it seems the typically amped-up Everton shotstopper is having the same wobbles again. He puts a routine ball long - very long - downfield and it flies away for an Italian goal-kick. The Azzurri, with each passing minute, are growing more and more confident with each passing moment. Mount is flagged for a foul on the right flank and&nbsp;Marco Verratti stands over it, imperiously.

Sparks fly

A moment of one-two magic almost comes off down the other end for Sterling and Mount almost unlocks Italy for a golden chance again - but then it is the Azzurri's turn to cut downfield and push hard. That's not far off the mark from&nbsp;Chiesa! He offers a shot from distance, having shrugged off a would-be foul by Rice to fire a few feet wide of the right post. Then Shaw brings a long pass down at the opposite end again and squares it after edging out Di Lorenzo. Mount is lurking six yards out and it whistles just too far away from him to be tucked away. This is getting more open by the minute.

Chiesa fires wide from distance

Italy enjoy their best spell with the ball at their feet now - and come perilously close to unlocking England too, after playing a slate of lovely one-twos around the edge of the Three Lions' rear third. Stones again is the man at the middle of the defence that forces a poor back-pass, and then Emerson's stretch for a flat cross back in a moment later trickles out for a goal-kick under pressure from Trippier. That's much better from the Azzurri though. Roberto Mancini, now decked in a waterproof coat, will be more impressed.

Half-hour mark approaches

In what will be a huge boost for the visitors, Jorginho is back on - though it will be interesting to see how he goes from here on out. In his absence, Italy craft a few smart breaks but both are closed down intelligently on the edge of the England box, with Kyle Walker and John Stones putting their Manchester City teamwork to good use. The Three Lions have the answers at the back so far, but Italy are yet to hit top gear for sure.

This could be an early blow for Italy; Jorginho has gone down on the turf with what appears to be a leg problem. The Chelsea man, one of the best creative playmakers at Euro 2020, is helped to the sidelines by his team's medics, where he continues to get attention. The Azzurri aren't making a change yet - they will continue with a man down for the moment, in the hopes that he will be able to recover.

Can age bring wisdom?

Insigne goes a little too early after a long ball and gets flagged for offside, before England cut down the other end again, with Shaw flicking a lead-footed pass out towards Mason Mount that runs a little too deep for the hosts to handle. Some people wondered if a game between the two sides who have yielded the least number of shots against them in this tournament could prove to be a more grit-tooth affair. It certainly hasn't been the case so far. This is the first time Italy have been behind at Euro 2020, for those counting.&nbsp;

The weather does look to be worsening. How much is that going to effect the game? England pick up corners in quick succession now, the first off&nbsp;Giovanni Di Lorenzo and the next off&nbsp;Jorginho.&nbsp;The first is cleanly saved by&nbsp;Gianluigi Donnarumma, the second swung back in after a second bite at it from Trippier. The Three Lions have undoubtedly been&nbsp;buoyed by their start, but the threat of an Azzurri counter-move remains potent when they get going.

Shaw makes Euros history

Federico Chiesa is felled by Shaw a few yards on the edge of the England box now and the Azzurri have an immediate free-kick opportunity to strike back. Jordan Pickford looked a little spooked by Maguire's earlier error, and edges to his post. Lorenzo Insigne looks to curl it into the top-right corner, around the wall, but gets far too much height on the delivery, flicking it over the crossbar. The rain remains constant now, if not quite as heavy as it could be. Wembley could be a bit soggy tonight.

Gareth Southgate could not have asked for a start better than that, could he? Roberto Mancini has already shed his jacket - his side know that there will be no easy ride into this match now. Italy look to make an immediate respond but the noise of Wembley around them - a positive eruption of sound and joy - is serving as an extra bulwark against them. Kalvin Phillips gets a rap on the knuckles for a firm challenge. England will have to remain cautious, even with this lead.

IT'S THE START OF ABSOLUTE DREAMS FOR ENGLAND! Luke Shaw looked to be a footnote in England history a year ago - and now he's scored a superb goal in a European Championship final inside the first two minutes! A poor pass from Harry Maguire back to Jordan Pickford goes out for an Italy corner, showing some apparent nerves for the Three Lions - but they counter superbly from the set-piece, roaring downfield. Kieran Trippier - recalled to the side today - pops up on the right flank, with options in the box. He floats an absolutely beautiful ball out to the far side, where Shaw is waiting and the Manchester United left-back puts a first-time volley straight past&nbsp;Gianluigi Donnarumma at the left-post. He wheels away is mad celebration - England are on the front foot before Italy have even blinked!

The match ball is delivered by the small car, decked out in rainbow flag colours. Italy will kick-off. Referee Bjorn&nbsp;Kuipers checks his watch, and blows his whistle. Il Canto degli Italiani is followed by God Save the Queen. For the last time, you get to say that these anthems - at least one of them, anyway - absolutely slaps. Italy are in their royal blue number. England are in white. Wembley is awash with the crosses of St George. Giorgio Chiellini and Harry Kane exchange a pat on the shoulder. The former doesn't appear to rag the latter's cheek. A good omen?

After Eder - Portugal's Euro 2016-winning hero - has brought the trophy out, the two sides prepare to make their entrance. Bjorn Kuipers, of the Netherlands, is the man in the middle with the whistle tonight, awarded the honour of match referee for this game. He took charge of these two nations when they met in the group stage of the Brazil 2014 World Cup. And here they come for the national anthems!
