Pot One draw

The new format of the Champions League in 2024-25 sees the introduction of a league phase instead of a group stage, with 36 teams - an increase of four from the previous group stage format - entering the league.<h2>League Phase</h2>Unlike a normal league, where every team plays each other at home and away, teams in the Champions League 'league phase' will play just eight different teams, with four games at home and four games away.Here is where the seeding pots (<a href="https://www.goal.com/en/news/live/champions-league-draw/bltf0c65bfb2b74b360#csadbedd79037090cf" target="_self">see below</a>) come into play - each team is drawn against two teams from each pot, playing one team from each pot at home and one team from each pot away.So, as an example, Real Madrid could conceivably be drawn against Manchester City, Bayern Munich (Pot One), Juventus, Arsenal (Pot Two), Feyenoord, Celtic (Pot Three), Monaco and Bologna (Pot Four).<h2>Who goes through to the knockout stage?</h2>The top eight teams in the league advance to the Champions League last 16, whereas the teams that finish from 9th to 24th will be drawn against each other in a knockout play-off round for the right to advance to the last 16. The bottom 12 teams are eliminated from all competitions, with no transfers to the Europa League.

New Champions League format explained

<h2>Conditions</h2>Before we get into the draw and how it will work, it's worth noting that there are some conditions in place: <ul><li>Teams from the same association cannot be drawn against each other - so there will be no Real Madrid vs Barcelona or Liverpool vs Aston Villa at this stage.</li><li>Each team can only play against a maximum of two teams from any other one association. So theoretically Real Madrid could draw Liverpool and Arsenal, but not Liverpool, Arsenal and Aston Villa.</li></ul><h2>Draw procedure</h2>The teams are divided into four pots, each containing nine teams (<a href="https://www.goal.com/en/news/live/champions-league-draw/bltf0c65bfb2b74b360#csadbedd79037090cf" target="_self">see below</a>).<h3>Pot One</h3>A ball is drawn physically from pot one and is opened to display the team. Then, automated software will draw eight opponents at random, two from each of the four pots, including whether each game is home or away. The software will draw possible opponents based on the aforementioned conditions. This procedure is repeated for all the remaining teams in pot one.<h3>Pot Two</h3>Just like with pot one, a ball is physically drawn from pot two to reveal a team. Two opponents from pot one for this team will already have been confirmed. As such, the softwar will then draw two opponents from each of the remaining pots: two, three and four. The procedure is then repeated for each team in the pot.<h3>Pot Three</h3>The same procedure as applied for pots one and two is observed, with only opponents from pots three and our needing to be drawn.<h3>Pot Four</h3>The same procedure for the three previous pots is followed, with only opponents from pot four required to be drawn.All clear?! 😎

When does the League Phase of the Champions League begin? 📆

The 2024-25 Champions League final will be played at the Allianz Arena in Germany, home of Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich. A 70,000 capacity stadium, the Allianz Arena will be familiar to fans who watched Euro 2024, with the venue hosting a number of games, including the opening game and the semi-final match between Spain and France. The final will take place on May 31, 2025.

Sparta Prague have had the most arduous path to the League Phase, having entered at the second qualifying round. The Czech outfit had to overcome Shamrock Rovers, Steaua Bucharest and Malmo to book their place in the draw.
