France v Argentina: The Lionel Messi drought that needs to end

666. It's an ominous number and that's how many minutes Lionel Messi has played in the knockout stages of a World Cup without scoring a goal.

As a player that has stepped up time and again for Barcelona, Messi's inability to strike on the biggest stage for Argentina is something he'll be desperate to rectify against France.

Both nations have looked a shadow of themselves in Russia. The South Americans only scraping to the round of 16 thanks to a last-minute win over Nigeria and France failing to hit top gear as they cruised through Group C.

Marcos Rojo was the unlikely hero for Argentina against Nigeria with Lionel Messi jumping on the defender's back in celebration - an unfamiliar sight for a man accustomed to carrying the national team.

As the last Argentine to strike against France way back in 2009, Messi does however loom as the man his nation will look to once more with France never once losing in the World Cup round of 16 since its introduction in 1986.

The French conceded just five shots on target over their three group games with the sole goal scored against them coming from the penalty spot.

Messi can however produce a moment of magic that can tear the best defences apart, and it's something a disjointed Argentina side will likely rely on.

After a 1-1 draw with Iceland in their opening group game, the South Americans were then handed a 3-0 defeat by a slick Croatia.

Though digging deep to beat Nigeria, with Messi scoring his side's first, Argentina certainly didn't look a side capable of going far in Russia.

But just as Ronaldo is capable of dragging Portugal deep into tournaments, so can Messi do the same.

After 666 minutes without striking in the knockout stages of a World Cup, the stage certainly looks set for Messi to end his drought and possibly lead his nation to what would be a surprise victory.
