Feyenoord clash with VVV abandoned after floodlight failure

Less than a minute after the game kicked off, the lights in De Kuip went out and the match had to be stopped

The match between Feyenoord and VVV-Venlo was abandoned a few minutes after kick-off when the floodlights went out.

The Sunday afternoon game was the last of the weekend in the Eredivisie, but it barely had the chance to get off to a bright start as De Kuip suddenly went dark 35 seconds in.

Supporters around the stadium tried to help cover for the technical issue by shining the lights from their phones towards the pitch, as referee Bas Nijhuis halted play.

There was a 30-minute wait as Feyenoord tried to fix the problem, but Nijhuis eventually brought the game to an official end as the natural light began to fade.

"It took longer than usual and so we had to stop the game, as annoying as it is," Nijhuis told Fox Sports. "It's an evening game, you see how fast it gets dark. The problem has not been found."

The stadium director, Jan van Merwijk, apologised for the disruption

"We are terribly sorry, this is the biggest nightmare for a stadium director," he said. "The problem is localised but has not been fixed.

"It was somewhere in the circuit, in the control to get the lights on and off. So, it was not in the power supply, there is a back-up for that.

"This is very annoying for all the people who have come. We are disappointed, let us be clear about that. We simply could not solve it."

The Dutch FA (KNVB) will meet with representatives of both clubs on Monday to arrange a date for the fixture to be resumed.

"Playing on without the light was not an option because of the twilight," said Feyenoord coach Giovanni van Bronckhorst.

"You work towards a match, you get ready for the moment you can start. That happens, but after a minute it is done. The biggest losers are the fans."
