Xabi Alonso praises Vinicius Jr for role in two Getafe red cards as Real Madrid boss denies Kylian Mbappe dependency after narrow La Liga win

Madrid returned to the top of La Liga after a dramatic 1-0 victory over Getafe, but it was far from a typical display of flair and control. Alonso’s side struggled to build rhythm early on, facing a compact and aggressive Getafe team that disrupted their flow. Madrid struggled for clear chances until Vinicius' introduction changed the tempo and intensity of the contest.

The game turned when Mbappe missed a great chance but then capitalised moments later. After bursting into space following Getafe’s defensive lapse, the Frenchman slotted past goalkeeper David Soria to score his 10th league goal of the season. However, the main flashpoint came from Vinicius, who drew a red card from Allan Nyom within 50 seconds of the defender coming on - an incident that completely altered the game’s outcome.

Minutes later, Vinicius was again involved as Alex Sancris received a second yellow card for a reckless challenge on the Brazilian, leaving Getafe with nine players on the pitch.

From that point, Los Blancos controlled possession and held their lead. Reflecting on the match, Alonso said: "Coming to Getafe isn't easy. You have to know how to compete and put your best foot forward. You also have to know that it might not be the most beautiful match. We were focused and doing what we had to do. We had to roll up our sleeves because we knew it wasn't going to be the most spectacular match, and that's what it turned out to be. It's a victory that allows us to start the week with very good energy."

The Spaniard was full of admiration for Vinicius after the winger came off the bench and completely changed the tone of the match. His direct runs, intensity and ability to unsettle Getafe’s defenders proved pivotal, not only in creating chances but also in drawing two red cards that shifted the game in Madrid’s favour.

"Well, yes, he had a good impact on the match," said Alonso. "The cards he drew, the substitutions... All of that gave us an advantage that we took advantage of. It's a good example that everyone is important."

He added: "Arda [Guler] also had a good impact on the match. He found Mbappe well and it's worth it for a match in which we were struggling to get into rhythm, there were constant saves."

The French striker continues to produce elite numbers, scoring in 11 consecutive games and already hitting double digits in La Liga. He has been in top form for club both and country this season, making him not only Madrid’s top scorer but also one of the most decisive players in Europe right now. With 15 goals in 11 appearances, questions naturally arose about whether Los Blancos are becoming overly reliant on his output.

However, Alonso quickly dismissed talk of “Mbappe-dependence”, insisting Madrid’s strength lies in collective structure rather than individual brilliance. 

"I wouldn't say so. I'd say we're very happy with him. He's been decisive with his goals and his involvement. But there are many other things behind his goals. They're all important."

Madrid now turn their attention to a crucial Champions League clash against Juventus at the Santiago Bernabeu. A win against the Bianconeri would ease pressure ahead of the season’s first Clasico. The Clasico on October 26 could have major implications for the title race. Barcelona, despite an injury-hit squad, remain just two points behind Madrid. Players like Raphinha and Ferran Torres are expected to return, while Los Blancos need to manage fitness levels for Mbappe, Vinicius, and Bellingham carefully.

For now, Alonso is keeping the squad grounded. Madrid may not have produced their best football against Getafe, but they showed resilience, mentality, and ruthlessness, traits essential for champions.
