Wrexham provide 'temptation' for Steven Gerrard as Liverpool legend again tipped to replace Phil Parkinson as manager for Ryan Reynolds & Rob McElhenney's club

Gerrard enjoyed a productive start to life in management, as he guided Rangers to Scottish Premiership title glory - dethroning Old Firm rivals Celtic in the progress. His work at Ibrox earned the ex-England captain a return to the Premier League at Aston Villa. Gerrard lasted just 11 months and 40 games there before seeing his contract terminated in October 2022.

He then joined the Saudi Arabian trend, following the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo and Karim Benzema to the Middle East. More struggles were endured there, with victory being savoured in only 23 of his 59 games in charge of Al-Ettifaq. At that point, Gerrard decided to take a break.

He has been out of work since January 2025 and may be ready for another football fix. It has been suggested that the 45-year-old would be among the contenders to take charge at Wrexham if record-breaking promotion winner Phil Parkinson were to be ushered through the exits in North Wales.

Gerrard certainly boasts the global profile to fit the Red Dragons’ model, with collective ambition at SToK Racecourse meaning that Premier League football is the next target to be chased down. Another big name for the club’s award-winning documentary series would not go amiss, as Wrexham continue to build their brand on and off the field.

Nevin, who represented the likes Everton, Chelsea and the Scotland national team in his playing days, told Escapist Magazine of a potential appointment in Wales that would cause quite a stir: "I have to say, Wrexham's a temptation for Steven Gerrard. With Wrexham, what's the downside of that? The expectations are minimal from most people in football. Maybe not from the owners, let's be fair.

"But he could make that extra special. My eyebrows are raising at that one. I'm thinking, ‘Oh yeah, that could be good’. And of course, North West, Wrexham may have a wee understanding with Liverpool Football Club. I wouldn't be surprised at that one if that happened. Certainly from Stevie G’s point of view, that might be a temptation."

Former Premier League striker Kevin Doyle has already said of Gerrard to Wrexham when speaking to Boyle Sports, who offer the latest football betting: "Steven Gerrard has the American connection, having played in the MLS for LA Galaxy. He's a big name. On paper, you would imagine he'd be the type of manager they'd want for their story for Disney, which would be great for viewers.

"But you wonder if their aim is to entertain or to stabilise the football club where they are now. They've come this far, and they should slowly build on that and not try to rush it in one season. In fairness to them, everything they've done so far has been brilliant, so give them credit for that. Wrexham wouldn't be where they are without them. So, just see what their next step is. It's interesting."

The noise surrounding Parkinson’s future has quietened of late, with Wrexham going unbeaten through their last three fixtures in all competitions. On the back of a slow start to the 2025-26 campaign, they have picked up four points across meetings with Norwich and Derby County while also seeing off Reading to make the fourth round of the Carabao Cup - where a derby date with Cardiff lies in store.

The Red Dragons have a couple of testing matches to carry them into the next international break, with a trip to Leicester City set to be made on Tuesday. A quick turnaround will then see Reynolds and McElhenney rekindle their rivalry with NFL legend Tom Brady when Birmingham City pay a visit to the Racecourse on Friday.
