  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Wrexham's rapid rise up the football pyramid has been well documented and they wanted to broach Europe, despite not playing in the Premier League. Clubs put forward a proposal to introduce a new Welsh League Cup from next season that would provide an additional pathway into the continental competition for Welsh clubs. But the Red Dragons have had their dreams shattered by the FA, who are set to block the project.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

The English Football League have raised objections to the request, according to The Guardian, despite being presented with the argument that the competition would generate £3 million per year. UEFA gave its approval and confirmed the winners of the competition would be granted a place in the qualifying rounds of the Europa Conference League. The main concerns are that the integrity of other EFL competitions would be damaged and that Welsh clubs would opt out in a bid to qualify for Europe away from the traditional League Cup.

  • DID YOU KNOW?

The Welsh FA's main argument for the new format is that it would improve Wales' UEFA coefficient, which struggles as the country's best sides play alongside the English clubs. However, individual clubs have raised questions over Wrexham and their potential to gain a further commercial advantage by qualifying for the Conference League.

    WHAT NEXT?

The final decision lies with the English FA, who will discuss the matter at a meeting next week, which includes representatives from the Premier League and EFL.
