  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Clattenburg refereed the first leg of the Champions League quarter-final between the Spanish and German sides in April 2014, while Klopp was still in charge of Dortmund. Madrid ran out 3-0 winners in the first leg at the Santiago Bernabeu, with Gareth Bale opening the scoring inside three minutes before Isco and Cristiano Ronaldo killed the game off. Dortmund won the return leg 2-0, but went crashing out of the competition.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Clattenburg says he was involved in a fiery exchange with Klopp after the game when Brazil and Madrid star Marcelo requested a picture with him. When the German manager walked past, he blew up at the referee.

  • WHAT CLATTENBURG SAID

"I had a big run-in with Jurgen but I was lucky because it was at Real Madrid, he was the Dortmund manager and they'd just been beaten 3-0. I thought I had a good game," he said on The Overlap, brought to you by Sky Bet.

"It was Marcelo, the full-back, crazy, but he says: 'Can I have a picture?'. I'm like: 'What with me?' and he said: 'Yeah, can I have a picture?'. Referees never get pictures with players. I said: 'Yeah, of course'.

"And I'm standing outside my dressing room, and his wife was there and some of his family - and Jurgen came past, and he went: 'F*cking hell. Is that why we got beat f*cking 3-0?'.

"I turned around and I said: 'You're f*cking lucky that you got beat 3-0, f*ck off'. Everybody laughed but I was pleased I was in Real Madrid and not Dortmund, because I would have had to get out of Dortmund alive."

  • WHAT NEXT?

While Clattenburg has retired from refereeing and Klopp has taken a job with Red Bull, Madrid and Dortmund could meet in the Champions League final for the second year in a row if they survive the upcoming quarter-finals and progress beyond the semis. Dortmund take on Barcelona in their tie, while Madrid are up against Arsenal.
