  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Legendary Argentine defender Javier Zanetti has backed Kylian Mbappe to come good at Real Madrid and show his true self in a matter of time. Mbappe finally got his much-awaited move to the Spanish capital last summer, but he has been remarkably unconvincing for the reigning LaLiga and Champions League winners.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Mbappe has been struggling in attack for Los Blancos, despite scoring 10 goals in 20 appearances in all competitions. Even though he has been amongst the goals, the general consensus has been that this is a player who can contribute so much more, but is held back by a lack of confidence and boldness in the final third.

In the last week itself, the French forward has missed two penalties in two important games, first at Anfield against Liverpool, and then on Wednesday against Athletic Club at San Mames. In both games, Real Madrid were trailing 1-0 when Mbappe stood over the ball in the penalty area. However, on both occasions, his penalty was saved by the goalkeepers. Madrid went on to lose both games, which could have serious repercussions on their aspirations come the end of the season.

Mbappe's poor displays have drawn the ire of both the media and the Real Madrid fans, but Inter legend Zanetti is not concerned about the 25-year-old, claiming that he's just going through a temporary lean patch.

  • WHAT JAVIER ZANETTI SAID

Speaking at a recent event, Zanetti had absolutely no doubt that Mbappe will soon show his real quality. "No, I think they are moments. We are talking about a great player, and I have no doubt that he is, in a short time, going to be the Mbappe we all know," Zanetti said (as captured by MARCA).

    WHAT NEXT FOR KYLIAN MBAPPE?

Following the game against Athletic Club, Real Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti refused to point the fingers at Mbappe, asserting that he "won't judge players on the basis of whether they score penalties or not." Such support will be important for Mbappe to begin a new lease of life at the Santiago Bernabeu. The former PSG man has promised Madridistas that he'll turn his situation around, and the fans will hope he produces a season-changing performance against Girona in LaLiga on Saturday, December 7.
