Wolves established a 2-0 lead at The Hawthorns courtesy of goals from Pedro Neto and Matheus Cunha. • THE BIGGER PICTURE

There were a little over 10 minutes left on the clock when the cup derby, which always promised fireworks, had to be brought to a halt. Police forces were quick on the scene, but a number of supporters ended up on the playing field. Scuffles broke out around the ground, with the Birmingham Road End seeing the biggest disturbance.

    DID YOU KNOW?

It was quickly decided that the players should be removed from the field, as they headed back down the tunnel. Some of the stars on show made a point of removing their children from the area of the ground where most of the trouble was occurring.

  • WHAT NEXT?

The game could not continue until safety officers were in a position to give a green light, with troubling scenes casting a dark cloud over a game that saw two fierce Black Country neighbours go head-to-head for the first time since May 2021. Wolves closed out the 2-0 victory after play finally resumed, with the FA subsequently releasing an official statement confirming that the ugly events in the stand will be investigated.

“The disorder that occurred at the Black County derby between West Bromwich Albion and Wolverhampton Wanderers is completely unacceptable," the statement from an FA spokesperson reads. "Safety and security are of the utmost importance, and the behaviour of those involved is dangerous and inexcusable. We will be investigating these serious incidents alongside the clubs and the relevant authorities, and the appropriate action will be taken.”
