Viktor Gyokeres defended by Arsenal legend after being left 'alone' by unsupportive team-mates on Gunners debut

The pressure was on for Gyokeres against the Red Devils, and the reality of Premier League football hit hard as he failed to make an impact on the match, completing only four of his nine passes. With Arsenal unable to break down United’s defence with any real fluency, Gyokeres was often left stranded up front, isolated and with little opportunity to make an impact.

Nonetheless, Petit was quick to jump to the defence of the new signing, urging fans and critics to show patience. 

Speaking to RacingTipster, he said: "Well, this is only the first game, guys, come on. Give Viktor Gyokeres time. I remember myself when I first came to the club, it probably took me a couple of weeks to adapt to English football and to understand exactly my teammates in terms of movement and things like that. So, this guy was playing in Portugal. Sporting were so dominant, they were always in possession of the ball, and they were always playing for him."

Petit’s criticism extended beyond Gyokeres’ individual struggles. The Frenchman was surprised by how Arsenal dropped back defensively, something he didn’t expect from a team that had shown such high pressing in recent seasons.

"He didn't receive much service from his teammates this weekend," he said. "He was quite alone, he didn't get any support from his teammates. I was quite surprised sometimes how Arsenal dropped back defensively. They used to show high pressure all the time to the opponent; it doesn't matter if you play at home or away from home."

Petit pointed out that Arsenal's tactical approach had also shifted, moving away from their usual style of possession-based play.

"The DNA of Arsenal is possession of the ball," he said. "It was kind of frustrating for the last two or three years, every time they were in the last third of the pitch, they were countering the ball, they were passing the ball, but there was no movement inside the penalty area and things. They never used the open space behind the defenders."

Gyokeres has been highly praised in the past, particularly for his ability to stretch defences and get behind opposition lines. However, for him to shine at Arsenal, he needs better service and more support from his teammates. Arsenal will be hoping that Gyokeres can turn things around when they face Leeds United this Saturday at the Emirates Stadium. With the Gunners looking to build on their narrow victory against Manchester United, it will be essential for the new signing to gel with his teammates and find his feet in the Premier League.
