USMNT's Cameron Carter-Vickers, Auston Trusty suffer stoppage-time heartbreak as Bayern Munich eliminate Celtic in Champions League

Bayern Munich drew Celtic 1-1 in the UEFA Champions League on Tuesday, which eliminated the Scottish side over two legs by an aggregate score of 2-1. U.S. internationals Cameron Carter-Vickers and Auston Trusty started the match for the Hoops, with the center back pair playing all 90 minutes and stoppage time in the clash.

The Scottish side was in pole position to send the match to extra-time courtesy of a 63rd-minute go-ahead goal from Nicolas-Gerrit Kuhn. However, come stoppage-time, Bayern equalized through Canadian defender Alphonso Davies, ultimately handing the German side the lead via aggregate.

After an initial save from goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel, the ball was parried into danger, where Carter-Vickers himself attempted to clear the ball, only for a forcefully sprinting Davies to run into his challenge, forcing the ball into the back of the net.

Trusty completed 93 percent of his passes on the day while registering 60 touches on the ball and winning 100 percent of his tackles from a defensive position. Carter-Vickers, meanwhile, boasted an 87 percent passing completion percentage, with 60 touches himself, while winning two of four possible ground duels.

Both defenders are experienced U.S. internationals and are in contention to be a part of Mauricio Pochettino's March USMNT camp for the CONCACAF Nations League semifinals.

Celtic have, to date, not won a knockout round Champions League game as a club. Tuesday, they were seconds away from potentially achieving the feat.

The U.S. internationals and the Scottish side will return to the pitch this weekend in the Scottish Premiership when they take on Hibernian in domestic league action.
