    WHAT HAPPENED?

U.S. international James Sands has made his debut at St. Pauli, coming on as a late substitute in the club's 1-0 loss to Eintracht Frankfurt.

Sands recently joined St. Pauli on a six-month loan from New York City FC, with the move being made official on New Year's Day. With his side chasing the game, the 24-year-old American was thrown right into the fire for a debut on Saturday, subbing on at the 78th minute.

Sands didn't get to do much, but he did complete four of his five passes in the brief moments he did get on the ball. St. Pauli, though, couldn't secure a result, with a goal from goalscoring sensation Omar Marmoush winning it for Frankfurt.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

The move to St. Pauli is Sands' second stint in Europe, having previously played for Scottish giants Rangers from 2022-2023. His 18-month loan ended with a return to NYCFC, where Sands has been a key figure throughout the 2023 and 2024 MLS campaigns, making a combined 67 appearances in all competitions for his hometown club.

Able to play as either a defensive midfielder or a centerback, Sands has found himself on the fringes of the U.S. men's national team in recent years. He made seven appearances in 2021, when he helped the USMNT claim the Gold Cup. He was recalled for the 2023 tournament, too, with the other six of his 13 international caps coming that year.

    WHAT WAS SAID

"James Sands offers an exciting mix of athleticism and footballing ability," St. Pauli Director of Sport Andreas Bornemann said of Sands upon his arrival. "Another positive aspect is that he can be deployed both in central holding midfield and central defense. As he has already played at a higher level in Europe, we believe he can quickly acclimatise to the club and the Bundesliga."

Added Head coach Alexander Blessin: "In James, we're getting an intelligent player who has a very good understanding of the game and finds constructive solutions under pressure thanks to his sound technique. His defensive anticipation helps him to make lots of interceptions and quickly exert pressure on opponents. He has demonstrated these qualities both in the U.S. and during his spell in Scotland."
