USMNT goalkeeper Matt Turner earns first Crystal Palace start vs Aston Villa in EFL Cup

Ahead of Crystal Palace's EFL Cup Round 4 clash with Aston Villa on Wednesday, Palace manager Oliver Glasner handed U.S. Men's National Team goalkeeper Matt Turner his first start with the London club.

Turner joined the Premier League side from Nottingham Forest during the summer transfer window on a season-long loan. For the American, it is his first appearance since February 28, when he started against Manchester United in an FA Cup clash.

Turner has struggled for playing time during the calendar year at the club level since losing his starting spot in the Winter at Forest. The club brought in former Strasbourg goalkeeper Matz Sels in the January transfer window, with the Belgian taking Turner's spot in net shortly after.

Despite the lack of playing time, Turner has remained the No. 1 goalkeeper in the USMNT player pool, leading the U.S. to a 2024 Concacaf Nations League title and starting in last summer's Copa America.

He was also in the side against both Panama and Mexico in October - new manager Mauricio Pochettino's first games in charge of the program.

Turner has made more appearances for his country than he has at the club level in the 2024 calendar year. For the USMNT, he has made 10 appearances across all competitions, while at the club level, he has made just five.

Turner will look to impress in net for the Premier League side, with a chance to make a lasting impact with his start. If he does so, more opportunities may arrive for the U.S. international.
